100 Years
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Roland Henry Engele, 100 years, of Humboldt, SK, on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at Humboldt District Hospital.Roland was born on June 21, 1923 to Henry and Elizabeth (nee Merz) Engele in Humboldt, SK. He was the nineth of twelve children. Roland obtained his education in basic school, attended St. Peter College in Muenster for high school, and then St. Thomas College in North Battleford. After college, he went to work for the railway for a few years. His love for farming was deeply rooted and he decided to do what he really loved, and that was farming so he moved back to farm. On November 7, 1950, Roland married the love of his life, Mildred, Lueke in Fulda. Together they adopted 4 children as babies: Vernon, Daniel, Paulette, and Geralyn. They loved the role as parents to these four children. The children brought them much happiness and joy. As parents they were always very fair with each of them. Roland loved his life on the farm, with Mildred by his side they ran a mixed farm. Roland especially loved to work with the grain production area of farming. He was always at peace and filled with joy as he looked over the open spaces of the land. In 2007, Roland and Mildred decided to retire from the farm life and moved to Humboldt. Besides farming and raising a family, Roland kept very active. He loved sports. He played baseball and hockey up until his 20’s and went golfing and curling well into his 90’s. Roland and Mildred were very active members at St. Augustine R.C. Church and often emphasized that church was #1. Roland and Mildred took a few bus trips to the United States and would love to visit and share stories. Roland also took pride in his beer and wine making. He loved the outdoors and nature, and was also an avid hunter, of birds and big game. Roland was the last living member of his family of 12. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his two children: Daniel Engele and Paulette Engele; daughter-in-law Valerie Engele; brother-in-law James (Frances) Lueke; sister-in-law Evelyn Engele; and by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
