A low pressure system tracking through the province brought the single highest rainfall event of the season for some locations on Tuesday. That from our PembinaValleyOnline Rainwatchers, who across the board welcomed the precipitation, even if it meant a pause on combining.

“Rainfall has been infrequent and sporadic for weeks throughout much of Southern Manitoba, and Tuesday’s showers and thunderstorms were widespread,” explained CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. “After an uninterrupted stretch of harvest weather, things will be on pause for a couple days, but I don’t expect that stop to be long. Sunshine returns today, along with seasonal temperatures, and it won’t take long for combines to be rolling again.

The rain began early Tuesday morning, and wrapped up by mid-morning in most locations.

The following totals are courtesy Environment Canada, the Manitoba Ag Weather Network and PembinaValleyOnline Rainwatchers:

Gardenton – 39.4mm (almost 1.6 inches)

Morris (in town) - 37.5mm (1.5 inches)

Woodmore - 27.5mm (1.1 inches)

Snowflake – 25.6mm (just over 1 inch)

Dominion City/Reinland – 23.5mm (just over 9/10th)

Manitou – 21.8mm

Altona – 20mm (8/10)

Morris – 19.8mm

Winkler (south of city) – 19.5mm

Clearwater/Windygates – 18.9mm

Plum Coulee – 18.5mm

Jordan corner – 18.3mm

Carman – 18mm

Kane 17.2mm

Steinbach – 17.0mm (almost 7/10th)

Elm Creek – 15.6mm (6/10th)

Cartwright – 13.0mm

Somerset – 10.8mm

25mm = 1 inch

“The remainder of back to school week will be sunny and seasonal for this time of year,” added Sumner. “Surface high pressure has built behind that passing low, and that means quiet conditions for the next several days. Lots of sunshine is in the cards, and limited shower chances through the weekend.”

Daytime highs Wednesday through Sunday are forecast to range between 20 and 24, with average daytime highs for this point in September around 22 and overnight lows of 9.

With students heading back to class Thursday and Friday, Sumner expects shorts, t-shirts and maybe a light jacket for the cooler mornings will be what’s needed for later this week.
