In Loving Memory of Sheila Katherine (nee Berting) Thirsk
January 2, 1952 to August 30, 2023
It is with great sadness the family of Sheila Katherine Thirsk, 71 years, of Lanigan, announce her peaceful passing surrounded by her family at Hospice at Glengarda in Saskatoon on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.
Everyone who knew Sheila called her Mickey! A name that has stuck with her from a young age!
Mickey was born in Nokomis on January 2,1952. She was raised and educated in Raymore, Nokomis and Lanigan. Mickey was the third oldest of seven children. She was a product of the 50’s and 60’s! Needless to say, she was a huge fan of the Beatles. Beatle mania was alive and well in her life! The Berting household was a drop in all evening beauty salon where she and her sister, Shirley, would dye friend’s hair, and then style it! Then came the makeup! Also, Mickey would pierce ears for anyone who was interested! She even developed her own technique that included an ice cube, sterile darning needle, peeled potato, and rubbing alcohol! By the end, all their friends left with different coloured hair, pierced ears and make up.
On April 19, 1969, she married David William Thirsk and they were soon blessed with three daughters! Life was busy in the Thirsk household with three girls! Lanigan was where they decided on to raise their children.
Our Mom had an artistic flair about her! She loved to paint, and she dabbled in pictures. She enjoyed painting their home and redoing antique furniture, which was another love of hers, collecting antiques! She would sit many hours at her sewing machine sewing party dresses, Halloween costumes and anything else she could think of. You could also hear the click clack of her knitting needles as she spent many hours knitting up a storm (or should I say sweater)!
Many wonderful smells emanated from her kitchen! She was a good cook and we all loved to eat her baking! Her coffee was always on for anyone who stopped by for a visit!
Once grandchildren arrived, she became this DOTING Gramma! She had eight of the little darlings! These little darlings were the APPLE of her eye! The unconditional love she shared with them will be a legacy that each grandchild will carry in their heart. “SHE WAS THE BEST GRAMMA EVER” was a comment that they all share to this day! While in palliative care, one physician commented on how he has never witnessed such love and devotion between a Gramma and her grandchildren! They were all at her bedside!
“If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever.” Quoted by Winnie the Pooh!
Mickey is survived by her husband David; three daughters: Leia Thirsk, Kim (Gerald) Bernauer, Trisha Thirsk; her seven grandchildren: Jaiden, Hunter, Emma, Abbie, Brett (Hailey), Owen (Karlie) and Rennen; siblings: David Berting (Helen), Shirley Hayes, Doug Berting, Sharon Berting, Susan Miki (Guy), Sharlene Lange and all her nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Carol Thirsk (Norm Kaiser) and nieces and nephews from her family.
Mickey was predeceased by her beloved grandson, Tye; parents: Barney and Isabelle Berting; mother and father-in-law: Jack and Violet Thirsk; brothers-in-law, Brian Thirsk and Gary Hayes. A Private Graveside Service was held on Friday, September 15, 2023 at Lanigan Public Cemetery followed by a Social and Memorial Luncheon at Lanigan Community Hall. Memorial donations in Sheila’s memory may be directed to Hospice at Glengarda, Saskatoon or Humboldt District Hospital (Mental Health) Humboldt.
