A Winnipeg man is in custody after police say they believe he discarded and detonated multiple explosive devices at a property in Winnipeg's Westwood community over a two-month period.
The Winnipeg Police Service says in a release that they were called to the property in the 100 block of Wordsworth Way multiple times between June 21 and August 21, 2023.
The investigation, led by Majors Crimes Unit members, revealed several explosive devices, including remnants, were located by the victim and area residents. It has been determined that the devices had been deliberately discarded on the property and detonated; however, no injuries were reported.
The investigation continued, and a male suspect was identified. It has been determined that the suspect and victim are known to each other, and the incidents are not considered random.
On September 7, 2023, officers arrested the suspect in a vehicle while in the area of the 3600 block of Portage Avenue.
A search warrant was executed at a residence in the 200 block of Harcourt Street. Various items associated with manufacturing explosive devices were located and seized.
A 30-year-old male from Winnipeg has been charged with the following:
- Causing an Explosion Likely to Cause Bodily Harm, Death, or Serious Damage x 3
- Unlawful Possession of Explosives x 3
- Fail to Comply with Conditions of a Release Order x 13
