The Portage Terriers held their annual training camp this weekend at Stride Place.

Friday afternoon saw the rookies check in and get in a couple of practice sessions led by assistant coach Robby Moar. They were split into three teams on Saturday morning and competed in scrimmages against each other. Some local players born in 2008 who aren’t eligible yet to make the team impressed in their debut.

“Ethan Breakey impressed with his ability and hockey sense,” says head scout Angus Moar. “He made hockey plays both with and without the puck.”

“Koy Funk was impressive with his pace and abilities. He dominated at times. We also have local players like O’Ray, Van Wyk, Kendall, and Davis on our radar.”

Recent Terrier draft picks attended the camp and didn’t disappoint in their first showing since being drafted.

“Reece Gault reinforced our decision for him to be our first-round pick. He is a dynamic defenceman who is active in all zones,” says Moar.

“Finley Titterson impressed with his physical defensive style and ability to move the puck. He skated well and showed flashes of offence.”

Main camp started on Saturday afternoon with the returning Terriers joining the rookies who made it past the first round of cuts.

Austin McLean, Slade Stanick and Brenden Holba led the way up front with several other players showing the ability to challenge for opening night roster spots.

Tayem Gislason, Parker Scherr, and Jordan Murray are returning on the blue line and Jayden Catellier and newcomer Gavin Renwick appear to be front runners in net.

The Terriers will play their first preseason game on Tuesday night at Stride Place against the Virden Oil Capitals. Admission is $5 cash at the door. Tickets are not available in advance.
