Stephanie Sara Buttinger
October 7, 1981 – September 18, 2023
The Buttinger family is very saddened to announce the peaceful passing of their dear daughter, sister, aunt, great aunt and friend to many, Stephanie Sara Buttinger, 41 years of Saskatoon, who passed away on Monday, September 18 at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon.
Steph was born in Saskatoon on October 7, 1981, to Richard and Alice (nee Hamilton) Buttinger, the fourth daughter born to complete their family. She obtained her education at the Lake Lenore School from kindergarten through grade 12 and graduated with the Class of 2000, whom she called “the kids”!.
On January 29, 2001 at the age of 19, Steph moved to Saskatoon and lived at Luther Care Home. She attended St. Joesph’s High School in the FI Program for two years and was able to celebrate another graduation in 2003. Upon graduation, she began working at Cosmopolitan Industries and Parkridge Centre. Steph lived life to the fullest, continually making people laugh with her jokes and one liner’s. It was often hard to connect with her because of her social life. She loved outings, especially to go to dances, movies and, of course, Steph was always up for a great shopping trip. She thoroughly loved being surrounded by many people. Steph loved to laugh and have fun. Her infectious laugh would light up the room instantly when she entered. Her life became much easier when she received and mastered driving her electric wheelchair. This gave her so much freedom but if you met her in the mall “LOOK OUT”! It also allowed her mischievous personality to get her in just a “bit” of trouble occasionally when she would skip classes at St. Joe’s and have to face the principal. She loved her family, especially her eleven nieces and nephews and her three great-nieces. She was very patient with them, but also didn’t hold back when they were being to noisy or rambunctious. After a fun-filled weekend of their affection, she was ready to return to some of the peace and quiet of her own home. Steph always enjoyed her family times together. She was a fighter from day one of her life and had overcome many hurdles with determination, strength, poise and laughter.
Steph’s infectious laugh and feisty personality will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her parents, RICHARD and ALICE Buttinger of Lake Lenore; three sisters and their families: TERRY (Lyle) Kunz of Annaheim and family SHANE (Andi) Kunz of Regina and daughter Makenna and great-nephew due in November, AMANDA (Braxton) Kunz of Middle Lake and daughters Vayda and Paisley, KRISTEN Kunz and MICHAEL Kunz both of Annaheim; SHEILA (Lorne) Kunz of Saskatoon and family EMILY Kunz (Soren) of Naicam, SAMATHA Kunz and MATTHEW Kunz, both of Saskatoon; and TRINA (Brad) Miller and family, ALYSHA Miller, MEGAN Miller, HAYLEY Miller and BRAEDAN Miller, all of Clavet; uncles and aunts: Steve and Jan Buttinger (her Godparents) of Saskatoon, Mary Buttinger of Saskatoon, Isabel Reimer of Calgary, AB, Alex (Ann) Hamilton of East Kilbride, Scotland; uncle and aunt-in-law: John (Barb) Vrolijk of Edmonton, AB, and Marguerite Buttinger of Humboldt; as well as many cousins, friends and caregivers. Steph was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, John and Sarah (nee Flynn) Hamilton; paternal grandparents, Anton and Sophie (nee Gerwing) Buttinger; uncle Butch Buttinger, aunt Irma Vrolijk and uncles-in-law John Reimer and Wilbert Schulzke.
A Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 11:00 am from St. Anthony’s R.C. Church Lake Lenore, celebrated by Fr. Prosper Abotsi. Interment followed at St. Anthony’s Cemetery. Memorial donations in Steph’s memory may be directed to Saskatchewan Cerebral Palsy Association (2310 Louise Avenue, Saskatoon, SK, S7J 2C7) or St. Anthony’s Cemetery Fund.
