Work is nearing completion to convert an old cardboard box plant into a new public works building and fire hall in Plum Coulee.
After months of delays in 2022, the effort finally got underway in January 2023. Since then, a separation wall went up to create the two spaces, a new concrete floor was poured on the public works side of the building and the flood on the fire hall side was modified in order to accommodate fire trucks. The north wall of the building was brought up to code, and an addition built on to the east side.
"It is expected the fire department will be able to move into the new facilities by this fall! So that's good news for the community and Rhineland," said Reeve Don Wiebe.
The public works teams moved into its respective side earlier this year. Most recently, the office occupied by the Altona Police Service also made the move across the railway tracks following Council's sale of the former Town of Plum Coulee administration office.
"At our last meeting, we passed a resolution accepting an offer from the owners of bridal boutique shop. The owners had been renting the building and sharing the space with the police department," said Wiebe.
