November 1, across the province of Manitoba, was Take Our Kids to Work (TOKTW), as Grade 9 students got the chance to witness what goes on in the workplace.

Blair Hordeski, career development coordinator with the Portage la Prairie School Division, expressed gratitude for the initiative's return last year after the pandemic.

"We really want our students not to necessarily decide when they're 15 years old what they want to do for the rest of their lives, but it's give it some thought. Think about what you might want to do as your path in education goes along."

PCI Grade 9 students Adam Vanstone, Connor McMillan, Sophia Costain-Starr and Penny Hill-Mazurat spoke with PortageOnline regarding their trip to the workplace.

"I think it would be pretty cool," says  Adam Vantstone, son of École Arthur Meighen principal Tracy Vanstone. "I spoke on the announcements. I helped out with a few kids that were in a bit of trouble, but it was fun. I helped out as much as I could to an extent. I liked it. It was nice seeing everything go down with how a day works at a school."

Connor McMillan took a plane with his dad to Pikwakanagan First Nation for the day.

"He was doing some sales deals there because he's a salesman for different reserves in Canada," he continues. "It was just kind of cool to see how they lived out there and stuff."

Sophia Costain-Starr went to Bright Smile Dental Clinic to learn what it takes to become a dentist.

"I got to help at the front desk. I also got to watch some procedures, and I got to watch how they make mouthguards for people who play sports. It was really fun. I enjoyed it."

Penny Hill-Mazurat went to the McCain Foods production plant to witness a day in the life of her father.

"I taste-tested some fries and mac and cheese bites. It was really fun to see how everything works"
