According to CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner, the weather story for the weekend will be an Alberta clipper that will roll across the Prairies, and arrive on Manitoba’s doorstep Saturday night.

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for all of Southern Manitoba.

"This low will be tapping into ample moisture being pulled across the region all the way from the Pacific, and also the cold air from an upper level low over Hudson Bay," he explained. "At this point, the current model projections are suggesting  some combination of freezing rain/snow throughout the day Sunday for Westman and the Red River Valley which would lead to icing and slippery driving conditions."

According to Environment Canada, the freezing rain is expected to develop early Sunday morning, and will build eastward as the low progresses. North of the freezing rain, there is the potential for heavy snow spreading from western Manitoba (north of the Trans Canada) through the Interlake.

The weather agency stressed there is significant uncertainty with this system due to there being quite a range in weather model solutions regarding timing, temperature, and location. Variation in temperature, even by a single degree, will have the potential to greatly change the type of precipitation that will fall.

"We’ll be keeping an eye on this one," noted Sumner. "It could bring significant travel impacts not only Sunday, but also for the Monday morning commute, as we deal with the leftovers from it."
