Legal Aid celebrates 50 years in Saskatchewan

Legal Aid Saskatchewan has been providing services to those who need legal assistance since 1974.  

Adrian McBride is the regional director for Legal Aid Saskatchewan in Swift Current and Moose Jaw and spoke about what they do. “Legal Aid offers a number of different services. One of the most visible ones is criminal defense, where there’s a risk of jail.

Saskatchewan saw cold and wet June

Environment and Climate Change Canada data show that temperatures in the province last month trended towards the cooler side. 

“The further north you went, the cooler it was with respect to average temperature,” explained Terri Lang, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.  

In the north, Key Lake reported a mean temperature of 10.5 degrees. That’s 2.8 degrees colder than normal, marking their coldest June in 48 years.

RCMP looking for Youth Advisory Committee members

The RCMP’s National Youth Advisory Committee (NYAC) is looking for new members. 

The committee is made up of up to 125 youth from across the country, according to Tessa Duc, senior youth outreach officer with the National Youth Services Unit of the RCMP. 

“We have those youth join us on virtual platforms from October to June every year, and they basically help us create and give feedback on resources, events, [and] programs that we’re running.” 

STF members approve sanction extension

Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) members have voted to approve sanctions past the current school year if a collective bargaining agreement is not reached. 

Eighty-three per cent of STF members voted on Wednesday and Thursday, with 95 per cent approving the extension of the job sanction mandate for the STF Executive and Teachers’ Bargaining Committee. 

The previous job sanction mandate expires on June 30, 2024.  

Did you file taxes on time?

Did you miss the filing deadline for your personal taxes? 

Most Canadians should have filed their taxes with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) by midnight on April 30. 

An exception to the deadline does exist for those who are self-employed or who have a spouse or common law partner who is self-employed, who have until June 17, though they still have to have paid any balance owing by April 30.  

Teachers to vote on “final offer” in May

Teachers will be voting on the offer given by the Government-Trustee Bargaining Committee (GTBC) on May 8 and May 9. 

Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) President, Samantha Becotte, held a press conference this morning, saying that the GTBC referred to the offer as a “final offer” many times during two days of negotiations.
