Police release additional photos of remaining Saskatchewan stabbing suspect

Following the harrowing news of the ten people killed in the Saskatchewan stabbings this weekend, and the finding of one suspect who was deceased, more photos have been provided to help identify and locate the remaining suspect.

Myles Sanderson is 6 foot one inch and 240 pounds, black hair and brown eyes. Police say he may be injured and in need of medical help.  He may be driving a black  Nissan Rogue with SK license plate 119 MPI.

Police recommend you not approach the suspect and report any information to local RCMP and emergencies to 911.

 

Koko Platz looking for a boost in rebuild project from Manitobaville contest 

Portage la Prairie's beloved Koko Platz Rec Centre is hoping to win some cool hard cash with the help of voters in the 2022 installment of Manitobaville.

Manitobaville is an annual contest run for smaller communities to have a chance to win $25,000 toward projects such as day cares, rec centres, movie theatres and so on.

Manitoba RCMP responds to fatal collision near Portage as well as two other in the province

The RCMP is sharing tragic news of three fatal collisions in Manitoba yesterday, with one of the incidents happening near Portage.

According to the police report, the collision happened at 9:50 pm. Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a single vehicle rollover on Highway 1, located one kilometre east of the Assiniboine River Bridge.

COPP tees off on 30 years in Portage 

Portage's Citizens On Patrol Program (COPP) celebrated 30 years of preventing crime in the community Thursday afternoon at the Portage Golf Club.

This was the first time since 2019 that the group has been able to put on their annual golf event co-hosted by the RCMP. 

Rose, a spokesperson for COPP, says that all the funding from this celebration will go toward Recreation Opportunities for Kids (ROK) and Big Brothers & Sisters of Portage La Prairie (BBBS of Central Plains).

She says how vital COPP is to the community.

Spruce Woods Provincial Park receives Manitoba's first dark-sky preserve designation

The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) has awarded Spruce Woods Provincial Park with the province’s first-ever dark-sky preserve designation.

Environment, Climate, and Parks Minister Jeff Wharton made the announcement. The province is excited that Spruce Woods, which is known for its beautiful night sky environment, is receiving attention from RASC.

Dark-sky preserves are sites that have incredible night-sky readings, as well as reduce light pollution as much as possible with the guidelines they follow.

Portage MLA Wishart excited about back-to-school funding from province

The Manitoba Government announced a full return to in-person learning yesterday as we head into that time of year when parents, children and teachers prepare for the new school year.

Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Wayne Ewasko shared the news that the province will distribute an additional $6.5M to support students' post-pandemic academic needs and well-being this fall.

Royal Canadian Air Force helicopters visiting Holland 

The Ag Grounds in Holland will be the scene of something unique this Wednesday.

Two Royal Canadian Air Force helicopters (a Jet Ranger B 206 and a Bell 412) will land at 1 p.m. and visit until 3 p.m.

Economic development officer for the RM of Victoria, Cypress River and Holland Craig Soldier says this is an opportunity he is thankful to help provide and you won't want to miss.

"Anyone who wants to, can walk up to the helicopters to see the inside of the helicopter, have a seat in it and talk to the pilots."

ROK Summer Camp 2022 comes to a close 

Recreation Opportunities for Kids (ROK) Central Summer Camp program ended last Friday afternoon in Portage with a trip to the Stride Place pool and pizza at the ukrainian bandstand.

Vienna Muise, executive director for ROK, says that this year's camp, which started on July 4th, was a good experience.

She explains that with COVID restrictions being lifted this year, they were able to do more such as inviting Volleyball Winnipeg to Portage to teach kids the sport and using Simplot Central Park.

High-wind effect warning issued for south shores of Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg

The Manitoba Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre is advising that high winds may leave an impact on Lake Winnipeg and the south basin of Lake Manitoba as well as the shorelines near Gimli on the west and Victoria Beach on the east side of Lake Winnipeg.

The winds, which will develop this morning and possibly last until the morning of August 30th, could possibly cause water levels to rise by five feet or more. Winds could reach speeds of 70 km/h.

Residents and property owners from around these areas are advised to take any precautions they can.
