Portage gears up to fog for mosquitos again
The City of Portage la Prairie announced on Thursday that they are preparing to fog the community for mosquitoes once again this summer.
This news comes shortly after their last fog, which took place last week.
PortageOnline reached out to the City's manager of public works, Brian Taylor, and he confirmed that the level of mosquitos being found in traps has triggered this fog. However, he believes some areas of the City still remain fine.
Herman Prior Centre's Car Hop ready rain or shine
Unfavourable circumstances may stop some, but not the Herman Prior Activity Centre.
Tomorrow night is scheduled to be one of the centre's most prolific days as they host their August Car Hop, but as Kathy Bryce, executive director for the centre explains that the forecasted weather and performers cancelling has made things rather tricky. However, she says there will be no stopping this party.
Portage weeding out Crescent Lake
The City of Portage la Prairie is beginning weed control treatment on Crescent Lake this morning which will continue until later in the week.
The weed control initiative will last two to three days, weather permitting.
The City says there is no swimming, canoeing or boating on the lake during this time.
Missing Portage girl found
Update-Luisa Alvarenga has been safely located. The RCMP thanks the public and media for their assistance.

Luisa Alvarenga was seen at approximately 3:00 a.m. on August 13th when she left her residence on 6th Street NE in Portage la Prairie.

Dean Toews of Toews Farms Enterprises and chairman with Feed Other Countries Undo Starvation (FOCUS) talks about how one of his fields is letting Manitobans come by, enjoy the beauty of sunflowers, and hopefully, donate toward aiding world hunger.
Toews says that the sunflower field is currently at 50 per cent bloom.
Foggy start to Tuesday in Portage
Portagers woke up today with less than desirable visibility as a fog advisory sent from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says we experienced near-zero visibility.
As of 6:29 in the morning, today, (August 16) people living in the rural municipality of Cartier, Dufferin, Grey, Headingly, Macdonald, St. Francois Xavier, or Portage la Prairie would have had a tough time getting to work earlier in the morning.
ECCC mentions that if you're in an area with low visibility, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance.
Theft under $5,000 jumps nearly 80 per cent in June of 2022 compared to 2021
The number of crimes against property, including theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen goods has increased when compared this past June to June of 2021.
The RCMP has released their crime stats and the Manitoba West District, which includes Portage la Prairie, saw a very slight decrease overall in the number of calls received, dropping from 5,121 to 5,080.
Disruption of water services continues Monday for some in Portage
The City of Portage la Prairie is advising citizens that more disruptions to some streets water services are coming to the city today.
Starting at 9 a.m., the area of 7th Avenue NW from 6th Street NW to Maplewood Crescent will have to deal with the disruption of water services due to water main construction.
The City notes that they intend to have the water services restored by the end of the day (Monday.)

Westlake-Gladstone Day Camp seeing fewer kids come to play
The Fun in the Sun Day Camp put on by the municipality of Westlake-Gladstone is in the home stretch of its program 2022 installment. There have been a lot of smiles this summer; however, they have noticed that there have been fewer participants.
J’lyn Funk from the Day Camp says that each summer, kids aged 5-12 from Gladstone and Plumas go to the camp Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m., with activities planned each day.
The program runs in Gladstone on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Friday and in Plumas on Thursday.
