Prairie Players are back in action

Local performers got the chance to take the stage after a two-year hiatus this week. Prairie Players, one of the drama clubs here in Portage la Prairie, is performing their show directed by Pam Stinson, Steel Magnolias. 

PortageOnline got the opportunity to catch up with Stinson and a couple of her cast members earlier this week, and they are so excited to be back on the big stage. 
The director notes that much teamwork goes into preparing for a show of this size. 

Semi mishap slows traffic

Due to icy road conditions, a semi is in the ditch just 18 km east of Portage. The incident happened early this morning and as they remove it from the ditch expect traffic delays in the area. 

Reports have also come in that the Tupper Street overpass is closed as a vehicle is blocking traffic there.

50th celebration in MacGregor postponed to spring

The community of MacGregor will have to wait until spring to celebrate the 50th year of the arena being open. 

Karla Gurke, facility manager and Recreation Director at the Municipality of North Norfolk, says that the events that they had planned are going to be pushed until the spring to be celebrated. The original plan was to have a roast beef supper on Friday and a fun day of activities on Saturday. Gurke explains that the decision to change the date was hard, but it needed to be done. 

The Life Saving Society takes over 2023 swimming lessons

Swimmers of all levels will see a new transition in swimming lessons come 2023.  

According to the Portage Regional Recreation Authority recreation manager Zapphira Neuschwander, Red Cross Swimming Lessons are no longer available. She says that there will be a new organization taking over for lessons. That organization is The Life Saving Society.  

"Not a lot has changed, but there are some changes to some of those skills inside those lessons, and the biggest change would be the lesson names."

Election day has arrived in the City of Portage la Prairie, and the polls open at 8 a.m.

Paper bras for sale in support of cancer research


As October races toward November, another annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month is coming to a close. 

With that being said, you still have a week to donate to Kara Pawloski from Just Be Wellness Studio. She is selling paper bras to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to donate to Central Plains Cancer Services. She says this is an important cause near and dear to her heart. 

First-ever licenced child care opportunity in North Norfolk

Parents in the Municipality of North Norfolk will soon have a new outlet for child care.

In August of 2021, a group of community-minded individuals created the North Norfolk Childcare Centre (NNCC) Board with the intent of establishing the first licenced daycare within the municipality.

Today, we are thrilled to announce that due to a gracious donation, a building has been secured. On January 1, 2023, NNCC will be acquiring the building currently known as the Lions Centre in Austin, MB.

Quilters are gathering in Portage

Quilters and Portagers alike are coming together at the MNP Exhibition Building for the Country Lane Quilters Guild Quilt Show today! This event is an annual event where they showcase some of the best quilters in the Interlake. Pat Crandall, one of the organizers, notes that the day is jam-packed.
