Dryden residents are receiving notice of a by-election to elect a trustee to the Keewatin-Patrica District School Board.

The election replaces last October’s vote which was stopped because of voting irregularities.

Some voters received credentials from both the City of Dryden and the Keewatin Patricia District School Board, allowing them to cast multiple votes.

Voting in the new election will begin on January 30th online, ending on February 6th.

Barbara Gauthier and Judi Green remain on the ballot as candidates.

There will be a new face leading Lakehead University, Dr. Gillian Siddall has been tapped to become the 9th President and Vice – Chancellor starting July 1st.

Siddall first joined Lakehead University 17 years ago in its Department of English, before going on to become the founding director of the University’s Teaching and Learning Centre and later served as Dean of Social Sciences and Humanities for six years.

Since 2018 she has served as the President of Emily Car University of Art + Design in Vancouver.

The Dryden GM Ice Dogs won a pair of games over the weekend in Fort Frances.

The Ice Dogs doubled up the Lakers 4-2 on Friday night and followed that up with a 9-3 victory on Saturday night.

James Hooton had a hat trick in that game.

He also had a goal in Friday night’s game for four goals in two games.

Elsewhere in the SIJHL, the Red Lake Miners got by the Sioux Lookout Bombers 6-3 on Friday night, but the Bombers managed to shut out the Miners Saturday night 4-0.

Senior leadership in Dryden says funding from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization could lead to an outdoor event space, as well as help to fund a number of positions and initiatives throughout the community. 

Council is set to vote on accepting the NWMO’s Significant Neighbouring Community Funding Agreement and their Near-Term Investment Funding Agreement tonight at City Hall – worth about $3.2 million over the next two years. 

The MPP for Kiiwetinoong sees the discovery of potential burial sites at a former residential site near Kenora as just the beginning.

A total of 171 potential sites were discovered during testing at Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation since last May.

Sol Mamakwa says the discovery is further proof that the governments must continue working with First Nations to find all children who attend residential schools.

Today the province has announced it will be expanding its Learn and Stay Grant which will launch again this spring for the 2023 school year and is committing $61 million over the next three years.

Almost a clean sweep for Beaver Brae court sports teams on Pep Rally day.

The Broncos took three of four games against the Muskies at home yesterday.

The Beaver Brae Broncos boys' basketball teams won both their games yesterday against the Fort Frances Muskies.

The Bronco junior boys nipped the Muskies 50-48.

Another close score in the senior game as Beaver Brae got by Fort 44-36.

A new partnership between ORNGE and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is set to bring life-saving blood beyond the confines of the hospital.

According to ORNGE, the leading cause of death for anyone who has suffered a traumatic injury is hemorrhage, the only way to counter that is to have a blood transfusion to replace what has been lost.

Not something easily accessible for those being medically transported by ORNGE, until now.

Sioux Lookout’s Meno Ya Win Health Centre will be searching for a new President and CEO in the coming months. Douglas Semple has announced his resignation effective February 1.  

The City of Dryden says it’s in desperate need of more lifeguards.

To that end, a Bronze Medallion swimming course is being offered by the Dryden Pool and Fitness Center.

The Bronze Medallion course is being offered during the month of February and anyone interested in starting the process of becoming a certified lifeguard.

It's a three-day course building on swimmers' existing skills and provides lifesaving basics.

Participants must be at least 13 years of age by the end of the course or have completed the Bronze Star program.
