Lac Seul Named As A Top Fishery

A lake in northwestern Ontario has been selected as one of the eight top fishing destinations in Canada.

Lac Seul is number one on the list by a company called Fishing Booker.

They say they are the largest online platform for finding a booking fishing trips in the world.

Fishing Booker says Lac Seul has an outstanding walleye fishery.

It says the northern pike and Muskie fishery is also said to be top-notch when it comes to size and quantity and smallmouth bass can grow quite large.

Northern Critters Seeking Foster Homes

Northern Critters in Need says it needs both volunteers and foster homes for their rescues.

Sam Kosik is a spokesperson for the group and says they foster pets from all over.

“Most of our animals that coming into care are coming from remote communities, whether they are drive-in or fly-in,” says Kosik.

“Some are coming from our community here in Dryden as well or the surrounding area.  But again, if we have an animal in need, doesn’t have a home, or isn’t being taken care of, we need these foster homes in place.”

Over $240,000 for Seniors, Youth in Machin

The Ontario government is pledging over $240,000 to support youth, families and seniors in Machin.

Kenora – Rainy River MPP, Minister of Indigenous Affairs and Minister of Northern Development, Greg Rickford, was in Machin yesterday to announce four projects aimed to support local youth, gym-goers and seniors throughout the community.

“We are extremely grateful to be receiving these grants from the provincial government,” said Mayor Gordon Griffiths, Municipality of Machin. “Without funding from the government, none of these projects would have been possible.”

Cdn Hospital Staff To Bypass Regulatory Process & Start Work ASAP; In New ON Legislation

Ontario has announced legislation that will allow hyper-fast-track healthcare workers to practice in the province.

The legislation has yet to pass, but the Ford government has introduced a bill called “As of Right”. It would allow healthcare workers that are registered or licensed outside of Ontario to practice within the province immediately; bypassing various Ontario health regulatory colleges.

Jan. 19 Sports Update

It was a hard-fought game between the Dryden GM Ice Dogs and the Bombers in Sioux Lookout last night, as the home team squeaked out a 3-2 win.

Next up, the Ice Dogs will be taking on Fort Frances tomorrow while the Bombers are up against the Miners in Red Lake.

Beaver Brae’s hockey teams managed a split against the Dryden Eagles.

The Broncos boys followed up on their tournament win over the weekend in Winkler with a 4-2 victory over the Eagles last night. Connor Perron earned the win in net.

Zellers to Find New Home in The Bay

Zellers is returning.

Its parent company, HBC, has announced 25 Hudson Bay locations where the Zellers brand will be incorporated.

The company states customers will be greeted with a selection of design-led products across home decor, toys, baby, apparel and pets, housed within Zellers’ signature red and white.

There are no locations in northwestern Ontario. The closest will be St. Vital Centre in Winnipeg.

An e-commerce site is also being set up.

Body Found Downtown; Identity Not Confirmed

Officers with the Kenora OPP are investigating the circumstances surrounding a sudden death in downtown Kenora.

Community Service Officer Jason Canfield explains police were alerted to a potential body in the Harbourfront’s south parking lot early this morning, behind a ticket booth for MS Kenora.

“We got called to an unresponsive male,” he says. “We attended, and right now, it’s a sudden death. At this point, it’s non-suspicious. We’ll be here investigating.”

Jan. 18 Sports Update

There are a pair of games tonight in the SIJHL, including a battle between the Dryden GM Ice Dogs and the Sioux Lookout Bombers in Sioux Lookout.

The Dogs are two points up on the Bombers in the tight race for the second, third and fourth spots in the standings.

The Bombers are 4-0-1-0 in their last five games.

The two teams have split six previous games this season. The last was on December 17, a 2-1 overtime win for the Bombers in Sioux Lookout.
