Officials continue to watch Red, Roseau Rivers as spring thaw continues in R.M. of Montcalm

Officials in the R.M. of Montcalm aren't raising alarm bells quite yet following the province's upgraded flood forecast for the Red River. 
    
Manitoba's Hydrologic Forecast Centre is now expecting a major risk of flooding on the Red this spring. A generally low risk remains for the Roseau River. Both waterways flow through the municipality.

Flood preparations begin in Emerson-Franklin

The Province's latest outlook has Emerson-Franklin reeve, Dave Carlson, hopeful this spring's flood will be more of a nuisance than anything, especially after last year's unexpected situation. 

Manitoba's Hydrologic Forecast Centre now reports a major risk of flooding on the Red River, and a general low risk on the Roseau River. Both waterways flow through Emerson-Franklin up from the United States. With favourable conditions through the coming weeks, the municipality is looking at a 2019-level event. Unfavourable conditions, however, could result in a 2020-level flood. 

Access Credit Union hits new record payout for member rewards profit-sharing program

Access Credit Union will be doling out another record-breaking payout to members this year. 
    
According to the Board of Directors, $13.5 million will be returned through its member rewards profit-sharing program. The payout follows a previous record of $13.1 million shared out in 2022.
    
In a news release, the Board noted, Access' increased scale thanks to mergers with Noventis and Sunova credit unions in 2022, and its ongoing success, contributed to the new record.

Prairie Hearth Development officially open in Rosenort

A dream two-decades in the making has become reality for the community of Rosenort. Stakeholders turned the sod on a plot of land on the south end of the community Thursday afternoon, officially opening Prairie Hearth Development for residential building.

Council for the R.M. of Morris purchased the land during Herm Martens' tenure as Reeve, following the industrial boom in the community after the flood of '97. 

Municipal emergency training day helps keep officials sharp

Municipal emergency coordinators from across the region gathered in Altona last week for a 1-day training session on how to effectively run an emergency operations centre (EOC).
    
The day began with theory in the morning followed by a simulation in the afternoon, facilitated by Shelley Napier, Executive Director for the Manitoba Association of Municipal Emergency Coordinators (MAMEC).

BLSD looks to public for future budget planning

The Province has delayed implementing a new funding model for public education in Manitoba, but that isn't stopping Border Land School Division (BLSD) trustees from preparing for when the day does come. 

Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Wayne Ewasko stated last month that work continues on the development of a new education funding model, with one-to-one consultations planned with each school division post-budget.

Projects across Pembina Valley receiving share of Arts, Culture and Sport in Community funding

More than 400 community arts, culture and sports projects will receive a share $50 million through another round of the province's Arts, Culture and Sport in Community fund.

Some of the recipients are here in the Pembina Valley.

In the Large Capital category is an ice plant replacement for the Carman/Dufferin Arena, with a grant for $475,000 

$39 million budget approved for Border Land School Division

Trustees for the Border Land School Division have approved a $39 million budget for 2023/24 - a $1.4 million, or 3.8 per cent increase, over 2022/23.

The division has schools in Sprague, Vita and Dominion City here in the southeast. Nearly all of the budget, $38.5 million, will go to paying operating expenses.
