Scott Crick says he has mixed feelings about being acclaimed to a second term as Mayor for the Town of Morris. Crick won the position after no other candidates stepped forward to run in the October 26th municipal election. 

Albert Schmidt, perhaps best known for his years as a teacher and as a long-time member of Altona Town Council, has passed away. He was 85 years old.  
    

Scott Crick is exploring the idea of running for President of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) at the lobby group's 2022 Fall Convention in November. The Morris Mayor says he hasn't been overly satisfied with AMM's lobby efforts of the provincial government, and the resulting outcomes.

A new Manager has been hired for the Altona Community Memorial Health Centre, filling a vacancy left by Kevin Hamilton in August. 

Neelam Borrison has accepted the permanent position, and comes to the facility with over 20 years of leadership experience as Nurse Manager and Director of Care in various facilities in Ontario. Recently, she also served as Clinical Specialist for the Red Cross. 

The results are in, and the entire council for the R.M. of Montcalm has been acclaimed for the coming term. This includes Reeve Paul Gilmore who will fill the top job for a second term. 

"I consider elections to be an integral part of a vibrant democracy, and apathy is usually not a good sign I feel. But, there's a certain anxiety for candidates when they're going into elections, so I'm kind of glad that it's over and that I can once again concentrate on representing my rate payers," said Gilmore.

Altona Police Chief Dan Defer says tapping Shawn Tarnick to be the department's next Sergeant was inevitable.
    
Having worked together for 22 years, Chief Defer says the experience Tarnick brings to the position is immense.

"This is his hometown. He knows the town, he knows the department, he knows how we operate and so, it was a natural fit."

Despite all this, Tarnick says he was still somewhat surprised when Chief Defer approached him with the opportunity.

Harv Schroeder is looking forward to his new role as Mayor for the Town of Altona. He was acclaimed to the top job last week after no other candidates stepped forward. 

"It's a humbling feeling that the ratepayers of this community have allowed me to be the Mayor, and I'm looking forward to a busy four years," said Schroeder. "It's an honour to be able to sit in that chair and see the town move forward."

He was asked if the weight of the role had hit him yet, three days after he was acclaimed.

A temporary off-leash dog park set up north of Altona's Millennium Exhibition Centre this summer has proven quite popular. 

"It has been used tremendously," said the town's recreation manager, Eric Hildebrand, noting the department has also garnered excellent feedback from users. The Town launched an online survey in conjunction with the opening of the pop-up park. 

The Town of Altona has submitted projects for consideration under the province's Mitigation and Prepardness Program (MPP), following the spring's high water event.
