Guilty plea follows arson charge

One Swift Current resident is facing the heat after submitting a guilty plea in Swift Current provincial court on Wednesday. 

31-year-old Joshua Neufeld pleaded guilty to a total of six charges, stemming back from a fire at Winks Convenience Store, Marty's Auto Detailing, and U-Haul trailer rentals back in November.

Although most residents in the prairies would conclude that winter is likely going to last another six weeks, the tradition of Groundhogs Day is still prominent in many parts of Canada. 

Folklore says that if the groundhog sees its shadow and returns to its burrow, the animal is forecasting six more weeks of winter. If, however, the groundhog stays out of his burrow and does not see his shadow, it suggests an early spring. 

Cheaper isn't safer

When it comes to home renovations, cutting corners can often end up backfiring, a trend that has been increasing steadily according to a local electrical inspector. 

Nathan Dyck, the local Electrical Inspector for the Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan (TSASK), explained that this can become a major issue if homeowners are hiring contractors for work that they are not qualified or licensed to perform at their homes.

Residents in Saskatchewan planning destination vacations through Sunwing Airlines via Regina airport have been required to re-evaluate their plans after the most recent round of cancellations from the airline. 

Sunwing is offering solutions for travellers that have been affected, including the ability to transfer their packages for same-day departures through Winnipeg, Saskatoon, or other Canadian airports, at originally booked pricing or they can cancel for a full refund. 

New app reduced calls to police by 50%

A new app launching in Saskatchewan is working to reduce the number of young people who are reported missing from government care. 

The new resource, from EGADZ, builds on their current Operation Runaway risk assessment tool which assists youth workers in engaging with and assessing the youth’s level of risk if they do not return home as scheduled. 

Don Meikle, executive director of EGADZ, said that affected youth were significantly involved in the development of the app. 

Experience the beauty of winter in Cypress Hills

Residents searching for outdoor adventures need only look as far as Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park. 

Every Saturday, two different programs are being featured in the park; a guided snowshoe program in the afternoon and an astronomy program in the evening. 

Brennan Rumancik, Southwest Parks program coordinator, explained that the snowshoe program begins at 2:00 p.m. and cycles on a four-week rotation. 

Repeat offender apprehended

Yesterday morning, Maple Creek RCMP responded to a business at the junction of Highway 1 and Highway 21, regarding a report of a truck that had been stolen from Moose Jaw. 

Upon arrival, officers located two occupants inside the vehicle. 

The female occupant was arrested without issue, however, the male occupant refused to comply with directions from the officers and a struggle ensued. 

Vote to apply for the rebuild of Stewart Valley School receives passing grade

In a major win for the community of Stewart Valley, the Chinook Board of Education voted to approve the submission of an application to rebuild Stewart Valley School to the provincial government. 

The vote was placed at a Special Meeting held on January 23 and is a significant first step. 

Chinook Board Chair, Kim Pridmore, explained that the decision comes after months of gathering information and evaluating their options.
