Local organization helps immigrants navigate Canadian society
Over 100 people gathered at the Greendell Community Center, 75 Woodlawn Avenue, on Saturday afternoon for the African Immigrants' Settlement In Canada (AISIC) Seminar.
AISIC is a charitable organization that helps African immigrants navigate a new life in Canada through different avenues.
"We are an organization committed to facilitating the successful settlement of new African immigrants," said Bisola, a Volunteer with AISIC.

The funeral service for Dennis Duerksen will be held Monday, August 25th at 2:30pm at Kleefeld Church of God in Christ, Mennonite with burial at the church cemetery.
Viewing will be at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Sunday, August 24th from 7pm to 7:30pm as well as at the church prior to the service.

Elvira Sudfeld, 83, of Winnipeg formerly of Paraguay, passed away Sunday, August 17th at Concordia Hospital. She is survived by her husband Martin, 6 siblings, 2 sisters-in-law, 3 brothers-in-law, many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by 2 siblings.
The funeral service for Elvira Sudfeld will be held Monday, August 25th at 11am at Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church, 145 Henderson Highway, with burial at Glen Eden Cemetery.
Viewing will be at the church prior to the service.

Fight to the finish: Niagara River Lions and Calgary Surge emerge victorious in CEBL Playoffs
It was a full house at the Canada Life Centre, 300 Portage Avenue, on Friday evening for the Canadian Elite Basketball League Playoffs.
The Eastern Conference Final began at 5 p.m. with a tough battle between the Niagara River Lions and Scarborough Shooting Stars.
The Scarborough Shooting Stars were dynamic and played consistently throughout the game, taking play opportunities during transitions.
The Niagara River Lions had a strong rebound game and were efficient at the free-throw line, making all 21 of their free throws.
Tyler J. Ashton cycling across Canada on 'a budget of oatmeal and generosity'
Riding back through Winnipeg on his way back across Canada, a cyclist from B.C. stopped at the CHVN studios on Friday with an update.
"I did, I cycled across Canada in three months," says Tyler J. Ashton from Port Coquitlam, B.C. "I have an auto immune disease called A.S. or Ankylosing Spondylitis. More people have it than M.S., ALS, or R.A. combined. That's over half a million Canadians."
Portage la Prairie suspect arrested after hatchet incident on Saskatchewan Avenue
A Portage la Prairie man has been charged after waving a hatchet and yelling threats out of a window at a residence on Saskatchewan Avenue East.
At approximately 1:30 p.m. on August 21, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a disturbance involving a weapon at a residence.
Officers quickly responded and saw a male yelling threats out of a third-story window at pedestrians on the street. At one point, witnesses observed the suspect waving a hatchet.
RCMP arrest truck driver 9 months after mother, daughter killed near Altona
A 25-year-old semi truck driver has been arrested after a Canada-Wide Warrant was issued following a collision that claimed the lives of a mother and daughter near Altona last year.
At approximately 8:50 a.m. on August 21, Navjeet Singh was arrested by Peel Regional Police and Canada Border Services Agency at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.
Singh had originally arrived in Canada on an Ethiopian Airlines flight following a 9-month Canada-wide Warrant for his Arrest.
