Stonewall RCMP are asking for the public’s help in locating 55-year-old Clifford Johnson, who hasn’t been in contact with friends or family for over a month.

RCMP receive the missing person report on the evening of June 8, though Johnson was last heard from in early May while at his home in Stonewall.

Investigators believe he may have travelled on foot and was last known to be near Medicine Hat, Alberta on May 11.

A recent uptick in black bear sightings along Highway 26 near St. François Xavier has raised questions about why the animals are venturing closer to roads and residential areas. According to wildlife experts, the answer likely lies in the early start to wildfire season across Manitoba.

This spring has seen frequent and intense wildfires, which disrupt natural ecosystems and force bears out of their usual habitats in search of food, safety, and territory.

Lakeside MLA Trevor King is officially a member of the Stonewall and District Lions Club after being inducted during the group’s 40th anniversary celebration.

King attends the milestone event over the weekend at the Lions Manor in Stonewall and says he’s happy to be part of the club moving forward.

“I was invited to attend the event. It was an invitation only by the Board and the members of the Stonewall District Lions Club. I was pleased to attend it,” notes King. “40 years is a milestone for sure and they've done a lot of great work in the community here.”

A man has been arrested after a robbery at a business on 4th St. E in Stonewall yesterday evening.

The incident happened just after 6 p.m., when a man walked into the store with a knife and demanded cash from the register. He left with an undisclosed amount of money, but didn’t stay on the run for long.

A short investigation led officers to a residence nearby where the suspect turned himself in to police, soon after the robbery. A search warrant was granted for the house, and officers recovered items linked to the incident.

A 47-year-old Winnipeg man has died following a two-vehicle crash late Saturday afternoon on McGillivray Blvd. in the RM of Macdonald.

Emergency crews from the Stonewall/Headingley RCMP detachment responded just after 4 p.m. to the scene near Road 8E, where a motorcycle and an SUV had collided.

RCMP say the crash happened when a 17-year-old driver of a westbound SUV attempted to pass another vehicle and collided with an oncoming motorcycle heading east.

With a hotter, drier-than-average summer forecasted for Portage la Prairie and surrounding areas, the recent death of a rescued bear cub is casting a sobering light on the often unseen impact that wildfires have on wildlife. The incident prompts renewed calls for caution and awareness as fire season is only set to intensify.

The Town of Stonewall has issued a Level 3 (red) fire ban, effective immediately.

The ban prohibits all open-air fires, including fire pits and fireworks, within the town and annexed lands.

Only gas and propane barbecues are permitted during the restriction.

Due to the fire ban, all motorized traffic use on the Rockwood Trail is prohibited until further notice.

A 34-year-old man from Winnipeg has died following a head-on collision between an SUV and a semi-truck on Highway 67 in the RM of Rockwood.

Stonewall RCMP responded to the scene at approximately 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 4th, just east of Highway 7. Investigators say the eastbound SUV crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a westbound semi-truck.

The driver of the SUV was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The driver of the semi-truck, a 41-year-old man from Selkirk, was not injured.
