Lakeside MLA Trevor King is officially a member of the Stonewall and District Lions Club after being inducted during the group’s 40th anniversary celebration.
King attends the milestone event over the weekend at the Lions Manor in Stonewall and says he’s happy to be part of the club moving forward.
“I was invited to attend the event. It was an invitation only by the Board and the members of the Stonewall District Lions Club. I was pleased to attend it,” notes King. “40 years is a milestone for sure and they've done a lot of great work in the community here.”
Lions Club’s legacy continues
The local Lions Club has been serving the Stonewall area since 1985. King highlights one of their major accomplishments, the construction of Lions Manor.
“When they first began and I think it was 1985, by 1989 they had done their first phase of the Lions Manor there,” continues King. “And it's built into three phases since then, the last phase being in 2017 with a number of newer suites.”
He mentions how the housing facility has served seniors from Stonewall and neighbouring communities like Warren.
“For instance, there's a number of seniors that are now residents in the Lions Manor, including my own mother,” remarks King. “They've done some great things and lots of volunteer work and lots of contributions to a lot of organizations throughout the community over the last 40 years.”
Spring session ends with trade bill highlight
King also reflects on his work at the Manitoba Legislature, where the spring session has recently wrapped up.
“It was a long night ending it off, that’s for sure,” says King. “Lots of bills to pass and lots of words to put on the record with a number of them.”
He says one of the highlights was the passage of Bill 47, the Fair Trade in Canada Act.
“Gearing up to open up the trade barriers between our provinces is going to be a good thing with what's going on south of the border,” mentions King. “We'll definitely see some good things happen with the provinces working together and building a stronger Canada.”
The legislature adjourns for the summer and is set to return on October 1.
