More than 50 students from France will be coming to Saskatchewan this summer to experience Canadian culture.

It's part of a program from Nacel Canada that also aims to help the students improve on their English speaking skills.

The students are aged 14-17. Nacel Canada's Saskatchewan Coordinator Debbie Ackerman said she's still looking for host families for August.

Building permits skyrocketing in Saskatchewan

The value of building permits skyrocketed in Saskatchewan over the last year.

According to the province, building permits rose in value by 38 per cent from May of 2021 to May of 2022, eventually reaching $178 million.

Most of that is attributed to residential permits, which grew by over 48 per cent over the past year, while non-residential permits were up 26.2 per cent.

In the past, aquatic invasive species have been transported and spread by unsuspecting vacationers, both from inside Saskatchewan and neighbouring provinces, along with the United States.

'Be sensitive': Saskatchewan author says more support needed for deafblind community

As the Saskatchewan government marks Deafblind Awareness Month in June, a Saskatchewan author hopes more support can be given to the deafblind community going forward.

Marie Donais Calder became legally blind in her early 30's, but still managed to publish 30 books.

"I don't call it a disability. I say that we are not disabled, we are differently abled," Calder said. "We're all different, so you can't carpet us and just say 'everyone needs this or everyone needs that. I think we need to be consulted as to what we actually do need."

Test positivity rate, confirmed COVID-19 cases continue to inch lower

This week's COVID-19 report from the province once again shows a lower test positivity rate and fewer confirmed cases of the virus in Saskatchewan.

As of May 28, the weekly test positivity rate was at 5.3 per cent, a slight decrease from the previous week (5.5 per cent). 

There were 364 new cases confirmed, also a drop from the previous report which had 376 new cases.

More than half of the 364 cases were people who are 50-years of age and older (52.5 per cent).

There were also 9 newly-reported COVID-19 deaths, compared to 12 the week before.

For all the marbles: SJHL season comes down to one game

A grueling SJHL championship series will end one way or another tonight in front of a packed house at Affinity Place, in what promises to be a memorable night in southeastern Saskatchewan. 

With the series tied at three games a piece, the Estevan Bruins will host the Flin Flon Bombers in a deciding seventh game tonight at 7 p.m.

The home team has won every game in the series to this point.

The game is completely sold out with the standing room area also expected to be full.
