Banff National Park rockfall victim identified as retired university educator

One of the two people killed in a rockfall in Banff National Park has been identified as 70-year-old Jutta Hinrichs of Calgary.

The University of Alberta, in a statement, says Hinrichs was an educator in the department of occupational therapy in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. 

She retired last summer.

Her body was found shortly after a slab of mountain suddenly gave way Thursday afternoon, collapsing on hikers at a popular trail near Bow Glacier Falls, about 200 kilometres northwest of Calgary.

Searchers recover second body after rockfall near Banff National Park hiking trail

Search teams located a second body Friday following a massive rockfall off a hiking trail in Banff National Park.

“RCMP are notifying their next of kin and no further information is available at this time,” read a statement issued by Mounties and Parks Canada.

A 70-year-old woman from Calgary was first found dead at the site of Thursday's rock slide at Bow Glacier Falls, north of Lake Louise.

Three others were taken to hospital and were reported in stable condition.

*UPDATE* Boil Water Advisory issued for Dunston Water System in the RM of Stanley

Following today’s earlier notice, the RM of Stanley Utility Department has confirmed that only a portion of the Dunston Water System will remain under a Boil Water Advisory.

Crews were able to complete quick repairs, meaning the advisory now applies to a smaller area than originally anticipated. Affected locations are outlined on the updated advisory map provided by the RM.

Flourishing Winkler pickleball tournament is more than the sum of its parts

This weekend, beginning on Friday, a tournament that has seen noteworthy growth is returning to Winkler’s Lion’s Park.  

The Summer Solstice Pickleball tournament — which has 92 teams compared to last year’s 54 —runs from Friday to Sunday.  

The thriving event has become a significant one for the Winkler Pickleball Association. 

Morden Police recover tools after late-night theft from unlocked business

Morden Police are reminding the public to ensure their doors are locked at night after responding to a case of tools stolen from a business in Morden. 

“The [owner] noticed on their surveillance cameras that somebody had entered an unlocked door and removed a couple of hand tools from the business,” says Chief Brad Neduzak of the Morden Police Service. 

'The kid from St. Vital' comes home: Toews to join Winnipeg Jets

Hometown hero, Jonathan Toews, is coming home. 

Toews, the former captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, hasn't been on the ice since the 2022-23 season as he dealt with Chronic Immune Response Syndrome. His final game with the Blackhawks was on April 14, 2023, and he hasn't played since. 

Late last year, Toews went on a healing journey in India where he underwent a detox, in hopes of getting his syndrome under control.

John Braun, 94, of Winnipeg formerly of Plum Coulee, passed away Monday, June 16th at St. Boniface Hospital. He is survived by 4 children and their families. He was predeceased by his wife Louise. 
The funeral service for John Braun will be held Monday, June 23rd at 2:30pm at Niverville Community Fellowship with a reception to follow. A private burial will take place.

Altona nursing students awarded Dr. S.S. Toni Scholarships

For Sarah Graff, becoming a nurse means giving back to the community and supporting people during some of their hardest moments. 
    
Graff, from Altona, is in her second year of the nursing program at Red River College - Winkler Campus and received a Dr. S.S. Toni scholarship award from the Altona and District Health Care Board. The award is given out each year to a resident of the Municipality of Rhineland, Town of Altona or R.M. of Montcalm who is pursuing a health-related career.
