CN Rail says considering the recent rail shutdown things are running pretty good

The railways have been working to ramp back up following last week's rail shutdown.

CN's Assistant Vice President of Grain, David Przednowek says the process takes some time noting the key to an efficient ramp up or recovery is a very measured and planned ramp down.

He says that involved implementing embargoes so that products (especially toxic, hazardous or dangerous goods) wouldn't be left in transport on the rail line.

Przednowek says it's important to review how everything played out to fully understand the process involved in gearing back up.

Staff and students alike will have to adjust to cellphone ban in Border Land SD

While there were no plans for a division-wide cellphone policy in Border Land School Division (BLSD), Superintendent Krista Curry says the Province's recent ban on the devices in classrooms reinforces some of the conversations that were happening at a few of their schools.

Curry explained, many of the Division's principals were already working towards some kind of school-based guidelines when the legislation came down, noting cellphones in classrooms were becoming an issue.

Winkler south dike pathway repairs coming next year

Overall repairs to Winkler's south dike pathway have been fast forwarded after damage incurred by the popular recreation route earlier this year.

"The south dike is probably one of our most used, if not our most used pathway in our community," said Mayor Henry Siemens. "It's been there for a number of years, and it was showing it's age already. Unfortunately this year we did have some construction in the area, and some of the trucks were on that pathway. As soon as they saw there was damage being created they came off of it, but the damage had been done."

Chip Malt was in Quebec over the long weekend to celebrate his father's 70th birthday in the province's capital, and said he boarded a Via Rail train from Montreal to Quebec City on Saturday.

Cash-strapped parents seek back-to-school deals as years of inflation take a toll

When August rolled around, April Hicke realized the $100 she typically gives her 13-year-old son to update his wardrobe in time for school to start was no longer enough.

"Even on the sale racks, a pair of sweatpants at SportChek, they're still $25 a pair. You used to be able to go and buy a pair of sweatpants for $10," said the Calgary-based mother of two. "I am shocked at the (price) increase of kids' clothes."

Federal health spending has outpaced provinces, analysis shows

Despite castigation from provincial premiers over lagging federal contributions to health spending, an analysis of 20 years of health funding data shows that federal transfers have mostly outpaced increases to provincial health budgets.

In 2023, federal health transfers amounted to $47.1 billion, a 212 per cent increase over 2005, when the transfers were $15.1 billion. Total spending by all 10 provinces grew in that time to $221.9 billion up from $86.2 billion, an increase of 158 per cent.
