Bill 222 aims to protect property owners from trespasser lawsuits
One would think when someone is trespassing, breaks the law and hurts themselves, or damages their vehicle, that all rights would be waived where the perpetrator has no right to sue the homeowner, or landowner, for damages. However, that is not the case.
Last week Opposition House Leader and Interlake-Gimli MLA Derek Johnson introduced new legislation to protect property owners from unjustified lawsuits by criminals who are injured while trespassing.
Altona Council approves decreased spending for 2025
It'll be a 6.7% decrease in spending for the Town of Altona in 2025/26. Council has approved its latest budget, ringing in at $11.1 million, for the year.
According to Mayor Harv Schroeder, a big difference is not having a $1 million road renewal project on the books for 2025.
Overall operating expenses are down 6.7% with fluctuations throughout the various budget lines.

Carman Beavers, Cubs, & Scouts unleash their inner adventurers with geocaching
The Carman Cubs, & Scouts embarked on a recent adventure -- geocaching. Led by Eric Melvin, the group learned how to use GPS devices to find hidden treasures. "We taught the kids how the GPS works, and then we went on a hike to find the cache," says Melvin. They ventured along the river trail, where the children worked together to solve clues and find the geocache. “It was awesome to see how excited the kids were when they finally found the hidden treasure,” Melvin adds. It wasn’t just about the destination; it was about the teamwork, problem-solving, and excitement along the way.
Flyers survive Nighthawks surge, win in double overtime to claim 3-2 series lead
It was a game filled with incredible swings with the Winkler Flyers owning the first period, but the Niverville Nighthawks taking over the second period, before a double overtime winner by Winkler gave them a 3-2 series lead.
With the series tied, the Flyers wanted to come out and establish some dominance early.
They did just that.
Andrew Morton opening the scoring six minutes in as the 20-year-old forward picked off a pass from a Nighthawks defender, walked in and buried a shot top shelf, moving Winkler ahead 1-0. The goal was unassisted.

Abe J. Driedger, 87, of Altona formerly of Rudnerweide, passed away Tuesday, March 25th at Boundary Trails Health Centre. He is survived by his wife Sarah (nee Friesen), their children Glenn (Marge) Driedger, and Jean (Ken) Friesen, as well as 5 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his parents, 5 sisters, and 7 brothers.
The funeral service for Abe J. Driedger will be held Wednesday, April 2nd at 11am at Altona EMMC with burial at Rudnerweide Cemetery.

The annual fair is hosted by the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba this being their 55th year since their 'Royal' designation from Queen Elizabeth back in 1970. It features competition and entertainment from one end of the Keystone Centre to the other!

Winkler store employee detains shoplifting youths
Winkler police responded to a shoplifting incident on March 12th after store loss prevention personnel detained two male youths. Following their arrest, police searched the teens' backpacks and discovered stolen items from several other businesses in the area. The youths admitted to taking the items from various local stores.
