CEI changes not enough to help farmers according to ag group

The Canadian Entrepreneurs' Incentive program is undergoing some changes, but agriculture groups say that's not enough to help out farmers.

That's meant to help out small business owners with a tax break, but that's been out of reach for many farmers.

Kyle Larkin, the Executive Director at the Grain Growers of Canada, says now that's been changed but it may not be enough.

After nearly half a century, lawyer Gary Gilmour announces retirement

Since 1976, Gary Gilmour has been a fixture in Winkler through his law practice. After an impressive career that spans almost five decades — with a collection of accolades and achievements along the way — Gilmour is retiring.  

“At the time I got here, I was the only lawyer living in Winkler,” he says. “There were two other offices that came in on a part-time basis where the lawyers then returned to their main offices, but I was the only lawyer living here.”

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are 6-6 and tied for first place in the CFL West with the B.C. Lions. The Bombers, who started the season 0-4, held on for a 35-33 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the 59th Labour Day Classic Sunday in Regina. Riders kicker Brett Lauther’s 60-yard field goal attempt for the win on the final play of the game was short. Winnipeg led 29-14 at halftime. Backup quarterback Chris Streveler had two short touchdown runs; Nick Hallett recovered a fumbled punt in the Riders end zone and Zach Collaros found Nic Demski with a 34-yard td pass.

Goldeyes clinch division title with 7th straight win, announce playoff schedule

The Winnipeg Goldeyes (56-41) clinched first place in the American Association’s West Division with an 11-9 victory over the Lincoln Saltdogs Saturday evening at Blue Cross Park. It is the first division title for the franchise since 2017, when they won the second of back-to-back league championships and it comes one season after the Goldeyes finished in last place.

Liberal immigration pivot forces Canada to reckon with approach to labour shortages

The Liberal government's decision to reel in the temporary foreign worker program after loosening the rules to help businesses find workers after the pandemic is sparking a contentious debate about whether governments should even try to address labour shortages.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that his government is bringing back stricter rules to stem the flow of low-wage temporary foreign workers, and he urged businesses to hire and train Canadian workers.

Winter wheat and fall rye harvest now 90 per cent complete

Farmers are trying to work on the harvest in between the rain. 

This week's crop report shows Agro-Manitoba received variable amounts of precipitation over the past seven days. Precipitation for the past week ranged from 0.6 mm to 77.8 mm with areas of the Northwest and Southwest regions accumulating the largest amounts of precipitation. Minitonas (77.8 mm) received the most precipitation. Rain was reported in the Interlake, Northwest, and Southwest region over the last week.

Ball hockey league seeks youth to compete for RM of Stanley Cup

The region’s enthusiasm for hockey has resulted in the rising popularity of a different version of the sport — ball hockey. 

Riley Martens of the Pembina Valley Youth Hockey League (PVYHL) says that after a trial season last January, the league is ready for more.  

“[The trial season] was a good success,” he says. “We're ready to start up a full season.” 

Canada Post at 'critical juncture,' financial situation unsustainable: board chair

The chair of Canada Post’s board says the organization’s financial situation is unsustainable.

"The board and senior management recognize that Canada Post is at a critical juncture," said André Hudon at its annual general meeting on Wednesday.

"Significant change is urgently needed to preserve Canada Post's delivery network, which is vital because it's the only delivery network built to serve all Canadians."

Sports Update - Sunday, September 1st

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers face the Saskatchewan Roughriders tonight (6 p.m.) in Regina in the 59th annual Labour Day Classic. Offensive lineman Stanley Bryant will not play. Bryant, who was battling an illness, left last week’s game against Hamilton on the first series on a stretcher and an IV before being discharged from hospital. Linebacker Adam Bighill and receiver Drew Wolitarsky return to the lineup. The Bombers (5-6) have won three in a row while the Riders (5-5-1) are winless in their last five games.
