Sports Update - Friday, August 30th

The Altona Bisons and Cartwright Twins are going the distance. Jayden Gerbrandt drilled a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning and Trent Peters added a two-run shot in the fourth as Altona defeated Cartwright 10-6 Thursday night at Access Field. Isaiah Letkeman had a four-rbi night for the Bisons who evened the Border Baseball League's best-of-five final at two games apiece. The deciding fifth game goes Monday, September 2nd at Waldie Field. 

Teen facing sexual assault charges

A teenage boy was arrested by Winkler police earlier this month after a teenage girl reported he'd touched her inappropriately. 

According to Winkler Police Service, he was arrested for sexual assault, sexual interference, and failure to comply with a release order. 
    
He was remanded into custody with a Manitoba Youth Court date in Winnipeg.

Rainwatchers report Thursday totals ahead of pleasant September Long

The Pembina and Red River Valleys woke up to rainfall Thursday morning, and another round of accumulating precipitation.

"A low moving into the province from Saskatchewan was responsible for the rain," explained CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. "As the main area of precipitation moved out of North Dakota early Thursday morning, the embedded thunderstorms within it weakened."

Severe Thunderstorm Watches had been in effect for a few hours early Thursday morning for the Morden, Winkler, Carman, Altona and Morris regions. Those were ended before 7 a.m.

First municipally owned EV charger being installed in Winkler

In the coming few days, it's expected the first municipally owned EV charger station will be operational in Winkler. Installation work got underway at the start of this week.

"We're excited to say we're going to have the first municipal owned electrical vehicle charger in Winkler placed at the Meridian Exhibition Centre," said Mayor Henry Siemens. "By the end of this week, it will be there and be ready to be used by the public."

Ecole Discovery Trails will open in time for the first day of school

Morden's new school, Ecole Discovery Trails (EDT), will be ready to welcome students for the start of the new year on September 3rd. 

That's the latest from Western School Division (WSD) Superintendent, Stephen Ross, who says the interior is nearly finished.

"Regular classrooms will be good to go. The gymnasium looks fantastic with the new logo on the floor. So yeah, it's pretty exciting." 

Overdose Awareness Month: David Ledarney’s Story 

Former Winkler resident, now residing in Beausejour, Liz (Friesen) Ledarney says her son David’s addiction was very unexpected, noting it can happen to anyone. 

In fact, he was twenty-eight years old when he headed off to work in the oil fields in Alberta. It was two years later he had a confession to make. 

His mother, Liz, explained. 

Winter wheat and fall rye harvest now 90 per cent complete

Farmers are trying to work on the harvest in between the rain. 

This week's crop report shows Agro-Manitoba received variable amounts of precipitation over the past seven days. Precipitation for the past week ranged from 0.6 mm to 77.8 mm with areas of the Northwest and Southwest regions accumulating the largest amounts of precipitation. Minitonas (77.8 mm) received the most precipitation. Rain was reported in the Interlake, Northwest, and Southwest region over the last week.

Don’t miss out on a homemade meal at Winkler Senior Centre

Today (August 29th) at 5 p.m., there will be an abundance of home-cooked flavours to enjoy at Winkler Senior Centre's annual fundraiser.  

“It's exciting because we serve great food — there's burgers, baked beans, coleslaw, [and] everything is homemade. There's [also] ice cream for dessert, [and] pop,” says Nettie Dyck, the executive director at the centre.  

The fundraiser takes place in the multipurpose room. In addition to enjoying a meal together, it is also a chance to learn about and get involved with the senior centre’s autumn programming.  

APAS calls for review of CGC's bonding and licensing system

The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan is calling for an immediate review of the Canadian Grain Commission's bonding and licensing system to better safeguard producers.

At 11:59 on August 27, 2024 the Canadian Grain Commission revoked the grain dealer license for Purely Canada Foods and its grain operations in Saskatchewan. Farmers in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta that may have unpaid deliveries with the company should contact the CGC immediately.

Fall Grazing of perennial forages

Fall grazing management can really ‘set the stage’ for next year’s perennial pastures. It is important to leave sufficient carry-over (litter) on pastures prior to the upcoming winter months. As much as it is tempting, overgrazing pastures in the fall period is not worth the loss of production in subsequent grazing seasons.
