Weatherlogics calls for warm fall, but then cold and snowy winter

A meteorologist says this week's weather should be a sign of things to come for the rest of September. And September's weather should be a sign of things to come for fall in Southern Manitoba. 

Scott Kehler with Weatherlogics says after a week of cooler weather, we should see a return to above-normal temperatures.

Kehler says this change in weather is a result of a reversal in the jet stream.

Thanks, gratitude and joy after successful N49 Cruise for Hope

Echoes of classic muscle cars and today’s performance exotics can still be heard today after a very successful N49 Cruise for Hope which happened Saturday. This was the second time Pembina Counselling Centre (PCC) held the fundraiser, with 2024 the inaugural event. Altona's Millennium Exhibition Centre (MEC) was the starting point for the 95 vehicles registered, with the day ending at Morden’s Stardust Drive In with a stop along the way at Winkler's Hometown Ford for a car show.

U18 AAA Female Hawks carving out a hardworking identity

The Pembina Valley U18 AAA Female Hawks have started their preseason, and early on, Head Coach Matt Victor says the group is building an identity he and the players will be proud of.

"It's been exciting," Victor says with a grin. "We built our team at tryouts in early August, and we shutdown for a little bit, we had some players playing in the U15 softball nationals in Winkler. We fired up after that, got some practices in, and I really like what we've built so far, and the group we have."

Heritage Farms to open Winkler’s first craft brewery 

Heritage Farms Brewing Company, the locally born beer brand that has quickly built a following across the province, is preparing to open its own brewing facility in Winkler. The new site, located on George Avenue in the southeast corner of the industrial park, will mark the city’s first craft brewery.

The sound of singing, laughter, and campfire crackle has faded at Winkler Bible Camp, but the impact of this summer is still being felt. After a season filled with hundreds of campers, new memories, and a theme that inspired kids to “Follow the Track,” the camp is celebrating a year of growth and inviting the community to gather again — this time around the dinner table for its annual fall supper on September 23.

Build Canada Homes aims to build 4,000 housing units on federal land: Carney

The newly created Build Canada Homes agency will oversee plans to build 4,000 homes on six federally owned sites, as part of a $13 billion agency budget to speed up affordable home building, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday. 

Carney said that the $13 billion will offer financial incentives for builders to construct affordable homes and reduce upfront costs of affordable homebuilding.

Specific locations for the homes have not yet been announced, but Carney said they will be in Dartmouth, N.S., Longueuil, Que., Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg and Edmonton.

The Liberal government took some heat in the spring when it decided to delay the introduction of the federal budget, which is typically done in March or April, until this fall. 

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said his fiscal plan is set to be released in October.

 The Canadian Wheat Research Coalition (CWRC) has engaged Synthesis Agri-Food Network to review Canada’s wheat breeding innovation system in an effort to safeguard its ability to serve the evolving needs of Canadian farmers.

A review of the current wheat breeding landscape will help the CWRC identify and address potential risks and opportunities in the Canadian system while ensuring it continues to generate elite varieties for farmers across the country.
