Why you’re hearing more crickets this August
If you’ve been hearing more chirps in your backyard or even your garage lately, you’re not alone. According to John Gavloski, entomologist with Manitoba Agriculture, there’s a seasonal reason behind the sound.
Gavloski notes that there are actually 17 different species of crickets in the province.

Province approves new 16-month BEd degree at Canadian Mennonite University
Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) has received provincial approval to launch a new condensed 16-month Bachelor of Education after-degree program, set to welcome its first cohort in August 2026.
The program aims to prepare confident, community-minded teachers to work in classrooms across Manitoba and beyond, with 28 weeks of practicum placements built into the schedule. The practicum includes extended time in rural and northern communities.

A meeting between Canada Post and the union representing 55,000 postal workers has been delayed until next week due to the availability of federal mediators, the company says.
The two sides, which were set to meet Friday, will now meet on Aug. 20.
It's been two weeks since members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers rejected the employers' latest offers in a majority vote.
After more than a year and a half of negotiations, the two sides met with federal mediators earlier this week before agreeing to meet with each other.
