The latest developments in the labour dispute at Canada's two biggest railways

The federal government is intervening in a countrywide work stoppage at Canada's two biggest railways, but railworkers are pushing back against Ottawa's move to get them back on the job.

In the culmination of months of increasingly bitter negotiations, Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. locked out 9,300 engineers, conductors and yard workers in the early hours of Thursday.

Christina Falk takes on provincial role with Habitat for Humanity

The former Chairperson of Morden-Winkler Habitat for Humanity is now helping the province's dozen-or-so chapters fulfill their missions. Christina Falk was hired as Habitat for Humanity Manitoba's Manager of Chapter Support this past spring.

"She and her husband, Duane, kind of resurrected that chapter about six or seven years ago in Winkler. And when we posted this job, she made the decision to leave her fulltime job and come work fulltime for Habitat. We are just thrilled to have her," said Jamie Hall, CEO of the Manitoba organization.

Rail union gives CN 72-hour strike notice, continuing rail stoppage

The ongoing rail conflict between members of the Teamster's Canada Rail Conference (TCRC), CPKC, and CN Rail has had another development as the union is planning a strike.

This morning the TCRC issued a 72-hour strike notice which detailed that they would be withdrawing work for 6500 members from CN Rail beginning on Monday.

The union previously issued strike notices for CPKC, which will have workers remain off the job pending an order from the Canada Industrial Relations Board.

Jacob Wiens, 86, of Steinbach formerly of Grunthal and the Pansy area, passed away Wednesday, August 21st at Bethesda Regional Health Centre. He is survived by his wife Nettie, 3 daughters, 6 sons, 1 sister, 1 brother and their families.He was predeceased by his first wife Justina, his second wife Anna, 1 daughter, 4 sons, 1 granddaughter and 1 great-grandson. 
The funeral service for Jacob Wiens will be held Monday, August 26th at 2pm at New Bothwell Sommerfeld Church with burial at the church cemetery. 

Rainwatchers check in from Thursday showers

An early morning round of showers and thunderstorms had PembinaValleyOnline Rainwatchers checking their gauges before noon Thursday.

“An area of showers and thunderstorms that pushed out of central North Dakota then moved northeasterly across Southern Manitoba, and brought another round of accumulating rainfall to the region,” explained CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. “Most of the precipitation fell between 4am and 10am Thursday, with it out of the region before noon.”

Corrine Sawatzky nee Driedger, 60, of Altona passed away Wednesday, August 21st at Boundary Trails Health Centre. She is survived by her husband Cliff, 2 daughters, 2 sons, her parents Bill and Dora Driedger, 1 sister, 2 brothers, and their families. She was predeceased by 2 grandchildren.

The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference says it has taken down picket lines at Canadian National Railway Co. and its workers will begin returning to work on Friday.

However, the union says the work stoppage at Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. remains ongoing pending an order from the Canada Industrial Relations Board.

Following months of increasingly fraught contract talks, Canada's two biggest railways both locked out workers after failing to reach deals with the union by a Thursday deadline.
