Broncos complete 2023 WHL Prospects Draft

The 2023 WHL Prospects Draft was held Thursday and the Swift Current Broncos added nine prospects to the organization with six forwards and three defencemen.

With their first pick in the draft, 30th overall, the Broncos selected forward Sawyer Dingman from the Northern Alberta Xtreme program. Listed at 6’2’’ and 193 pounds, Dingman recorded 34 points (11-23-34) in 30 games to go along with 60 penalty minutes. He then added five points (3-2-5) in five playoff games at the CSSHL Championships.

He is the son of former NHLer and two-time Stanley Cup champion Chris Dingman.

Josh Filmon signs entry-level contract with New Jersey Devils, joins AHL Utica on ATO

The New Jersey Devils announced today they have signed Broncos forward Josh Filmon to a three-year, entry-level contract. The Devils drafted Filmon 166th overall in the 2022 NHL Draft. He will report to the AHL’s Utica Comets on an Amateur Tryout.

Filmon, from Winnipeg, Man., wrapped up his third season with the Broncos by once again taking a massive step forward in his offensive production. Picking up a goal and an assist in the Broncos final game of the season, Filmon secured sole possession of the Broncos scoring lead this season with 75 points (47-28-75) in 64 games.

Hvidston, Davies earn Amateur Tryouts in AHL

The San Diego Gulls, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, announced today that they have signed Connor Hvidston to an amateur tryout. The Ducks drafted Hvidston with the 148th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Owen Pickering assigned to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced today they have assigned Swift Current Broncos captain Owen Pickering to the American Hockey League’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Appearing in games with the Penguins would not count toward Pickering’s entry-level contract.

Drafted 21st overall by the Penguins in the 2022 NHL Draft, Pickering set career highs this season in assists (36) and points (45). Overall, he recorded 45 points (9-36-45) in 61 games.

Broncos season ends with loss to Tigers

The Swift Current Broncos (31-33-1-3) saw their 2022-23 season come to an end Saturday night. A 4-3 loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers (30-29-8-1) saw Medicine Hat clinch the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, fending off a late-season surge by Swift Current.

The game couldn’t have started off much better for the Broncos. Just 3:16 into the game, Connor Hvidston took a centring pass from the goal line and fired a shot past the glove of Beckett Langkow, giving Swift Current the early advantage.

Broncos down Tigers in regular season home finale

The Swift Current Broncos (31-32-1-3) have a chance to clinch a playoff berth in the final game of the regular season after downing the Medicine Hat Tigers (29-29-8-1) 3-1 at the InnovationPlex Friday night.

The Broncos received three power plays in the first period and came close to scoring on two of them. On their second man advantage, Josh Filmon was denied off a one timer from between the circles before Mathew Ward was also turned aside by Beckett Langkow on the rebound, keeping the game scoreless nearly the halfway mark of the first.

Third period outburst leads Broncos over Oil Kings

The Swift Current Broncos (30-32-1-3) were tied 2-2 with the Edmonton Oil Kings (9-52-4-0) through two periods Tuesday night, but a three-goal outburst in the final frame led Swift Current to a 5-2 win.

Mathew Ward got the offence started for the Broncos, scoring on the power play midway through the first period. Taking a rink-wide pass from Connor Hvidston, Ward fired a one timer past the glove of Logan Cunningham for his 26th goal of the season. Owen Pickering had the second assist on the goal.

Broncos win hard-hitting game against Rebels

The Swift Current Broncos (29-32-1-3) received a sensational 31-save performance from Reid Dyck Saturday night, withstanding a furious push by the Red Deer Rebels (42-18-3-3) in a 3-1 win at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

The game had a physical edge to it right from puck drop as the two teams spent a large portion of the first period playing at four-on-four. The Broncos went to their first power play of the game just over five minutes in and capitalized to take a 1-0 lead.
