Shayne MacKinnon running for Mayor’s seat

The City of Dryden’s current City Councillor and former Chief of Police, Shayne MacKinnon, has put his name forward to lead the community as Mayor.

“After much support and encouragement from many of you I have decided to run for the office of Mayor in Dryden,” wrote MacKinnon. “We have such a great community and I would be honoured to continue to serve as a member of city council.”

McMillan announces retirement ahead of 2022 election

Kenora City Councillor Rory McMillan says he plans to step away from public service ahead of the 2022 Municipal Election in Kenora, as he looks ahead to his second retirement.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity,” said McMillan, in his comments to councillors on June 21.

“I’ve had the good fortune to work with many great women and men who have served our city as councillors and mayors over the years. It’s been quite an honour. I want to thank the people of Kenora for placing their trust in me and voting for me over the past 28 years.”

Rickford sworn-in to Doug Ford’s Cabinet, will serve two Ministries

Kenora Rainy-River MPP Greg Rickford has been named to Premier Doug Ford’s Cabinet.

In this session of Parliament, Rickford will once again serve as Ontario’s Minister of Northern Development, as well as the Minister of Indigenous Affairs. He was sworn into his role earlier this morning.

Kenora’s Koch, Van Belleghem run for Council

Two Kenora residents have put their names forward to lead the community as City Councillors for the first time.

Lindsay Koch and Kelsie Van Belleghem both filed their nomination papers for the 2022 Municipal Election on June 20, and now join incumbent councillor Graham Chaze in the official election race. Biographies or photos for the two were not made available at this time.

Voting issues reported for Grassy Narrows members, evacuees

Some community members from Grassy Narrows First Nation say they were denied their right to vote on Election Night 2022.

On Election Night, Senator hopeful for the Kenora riding and First Nation advocate, Tania Cameron, raised the issue that Grassy Narrows First Nation did not have a polling station open on election night, leaving members who decided to not evacuate to Thunder Bay late last month without any options to vote.

Youth elect majority NDP government in mock election

Students across Ontario say they would have voted in a majority NDP government in Ontario’s 2022 Election, after this year’s mock election from Student Vote Ontario.

Each election, Student Vote Ontario asks elementary and high school students across the country to participate in a mock election to learn more about democracy, the parties and their platforms and to help guide students to learn more about the future of the province.

Voter turnout historically low

Early data from Elections Ontario suggests that voter turnout has hit a historic low.

Province-wide voter turnout hit 43.03 per cent, down 13.97 per cent from the 2018 election, with 7,990 of 8,072 polling stations reporting.

This is lower than any previous election in the province's history.

Voter turnout in Kenora-Rainy River and Kiiwetinoong took a hit as well.

In Kenora-Rainy River, voter turnout was down 15.76 per cent from 54.12 per cent in 2018 to 38.36 per cent last night.
