Steinbach's year of road construction continues, now along Brandt Street south

Wednesday morning, road construction crews were seen placing pylons along Brandt Street south at the Main Street intersection, and continuing down Brandt Street south. 

Back in May of this year, the province announced that PTH 12 would be resurfaced for 3.1km between Park Road and McKenzie Avenue in Steinbach. And that the work would begin this summer and be completed by fall.

Multi-sport athlete Keeping continuing to find new levels of greatness

Calum Keeping is a 14-year-old multi-sport athlete who hails from Niverville and after a strong year in many different sports, he's looking to keep building toward a very bright future.

Describing Keeping as a multi-sport athlete might be a bit of an undersell. "I play soccer for fun, I play competitive volleyball, competitive basketball, I've played a lot of school sports as well, including track," the athletic wonder says with a smile.

Provincial minister tours Steinbach with city leaders

Manitoba’s Minister of Business, Mining, Trade and Job Creation visited Steinbach on Friday, where he met with Mayor Earl Funk and Councillor Susan Penner for a tour and discussion focused on economic development.

Minister Jamie Moses, who was in Steinbach earlier this year for a business forum and the Chamber of Commerce banquet, returned to see firsthand the pace of growth and expansion in the city.

Fire Chief and RCMP urge caution as summer traffic increases

Emergency crews across the Southeast are off to a busy start this summer, responding to a surge in vehicle collisions and urging motorists to drive with extra caution.  

According to the RCMP, the weekend saw several serious collisions. 

“Very sadly and tragically, the Manitoba RCMP has already responded to multiple fatal collisions in various parts of the province over the last few days, even before the Canada Day holiday.” 

From garage to growth: D&A Sales and Service celebrates Kleefeld expansion

Danny Berg’s journey with D&A Sales and Service began in the most modest of settings: his garage in Kleefeld. What started in July 2023 as a one- or two-day-a-week side hustle has now grown into a thriving business with a 2,500-square-foot facility – and big dreams for the future. 

“I started with a hope, a prayer, and a couple bucks,” Berg says with a chuckle. “We were repairing motors and pressure washers out of a 400-square-foot garage. It was very small at first, but we’ve come a long way.”

Summer break is officially here, and the closure of the school year has Hanover School Division's (HSD) leadership reflecting.

"It was a year with a lot of learning," says Joe Thiessen, superintendent of the HSD.

Hundreds of wildfires continue to burn different parts of Canada

Wildfires are currently raging in several provinces across Canada. 

The BC Wildfire Service reports that crews are battling more than 70 wildfires in British Columbia, with one particularly intense wildfire near the community of Lytton, having led to a local state of emergency and several evacuation orders.

In Yukon, the territorial government has lifted an evacuation alert for the area surrounding Ethel Lake, located approximately a four-hour drive north of Whitehorse. 

Despite this change, the wildfire that prompted the alert on June 24 remains out of control.

Canada Day celebrations draw thousands, as Carney says values are under pressure

Canadians took to parks and civic squares across the country Tuesday to show unity on Canada Day amid American threats, economic uncertainty and Western alienation.

"We've decided not to pull apart and fight, but to come together and to build. Because that's the Canadian way," Prime Minister Mark Carney said to thousands of Canadians gathered in Ottawa.

This year's festivities at Ottawa's LeBreton Flats Park got the royal treatment, with Prince Edward praising Canada's unity and accomplishments.

Dancing in the rain for Canada Day: celebrations continue

The Soccer Park in Steinbach hosted Canada Day celebrations starting at 5 pm. Fireworks were originally scheduled for 10:45 pm.  

Families enjoyed cupcakes, music, and games in the park, but smooth plans were interrupted by lightning and clouds covering the sky.  

Bouncy castles were taken down at 9 pm, when the first signs of lightning began.
