2025 Grads of École Heritage Immersion encouraged to have “Grace, Grit & Joy”

Graduation season has arrived, and at École Heritage Immersion in St Pierre-Jolys, that means celebrating a class full of talent, spirit, and leadership.

Among them, Grade 12 student Ava Pilotte has been chosen as the 2025 valedictorian, a surprise she says she didn’t expect but is honoured to take on. 

Officials say one dead, three hurt in rockfall at Banff National Park hiking trail

Police and parks officials say one person was killed and three were injured in a rockfall at a remote hiking trail in Banff National Park.

They say the search continues to confirm no other hikers are missing following the early afternoon tragedy at Bow Glacier Falls, north of Lake Louise.

One person had been found dead and the extent of the injuries to the other three is unknown.

Two of the three injured were taken to a Calgary hospital by STARS air ambulance and the third went to hospital by ground ambulance.

Manitoba to close wildfire evacuation centres as some communities return home

Some wildfire evacuees staying at a shelter in northern Manitoba may be moved elsewhere as more communities return home and the government closes temporary evacuation centres.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor said roughly 114 people have been staying at the shelter in Thompson for the past three weeks due to a shortage of hotel spaces.

"Folks have been there a really long time, and that was never the intention," Naylor told a wildfire briefing Thursday.

Police, rescuers respond as rock slide hits hikers in Banff; injuries undetermined

Rescue crews, police and paramedics scrambled to a remote region of Banff National Park late Thursday amid reports that a group of hikers were hit by a rock slide, causing possible injuries and deaths.

“The initial report indicated there were multiple hikers and there may be serious injuries and/or fatalities,” RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney said in a news release.

Parks Canada, in a statement said, it is responding to a report of "a serious rockfall incident with involvement near Bow Glacier Falls in Banff National Park."

Parades, trucks, and tractors; Tons of events are rolling in this weekend

The first weekend of summer brings trucks, tractors, and parades, as events fill up schedules.  The Steinbach and district farmers market opens Thursday, as an early start to the list of things going on this weekend. Additionally, there will be a tractor trek, the Southeast Truck show, and St Jean Baptiste Days events taking place. We will be at almost all the events this weekend, so make sure to tune in!  

  

Evacuees returning home, trails reopen as province provides update on wildfires

Manitoba remains under a state of emergency. However, travel and fire restrictions were eased in our province this morning.

Kristin Hayward is Assistant Deputy Minister responsible for the Manitoba Wildfire Service (MWS). She says Manitoba is at a moderate to high overall fire danger today. Hayward says there are sections of high fire danger across some of the forested areas. She adds a few pockets have low to moderate fire danger where precipitation has brought moisture levels up. 

Ottawa shows no signs of limiting MAID after UN panel calls for reversal

Ottawa is giving no sign that it intends to amend existing legislation on medical assistance in dying — something a UN committee called for earlier this spring.

The federal minister responsible for disabilities spoke at a hearing of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities last week, about two months after the committee called on Canada to repeal the 2021 law that expanded eligibility for assisted dying to those whose deaths were not reasonably foreseeable.

New stop signs added near Clearspring Centre to improve traffic flow

 

Drivers will notice some new traffic signs going up around Clearspring Centre this week. 

General Manager Gerald Jeske says a new four-way stop has been installed to address traffic issues. 

“We decided to help with traffic flow as we were getting a lot of complaints that it was very difficult to turn from McDonald's and from in front of Pet Valu onto the road going off of Park.”
