Manitoba government urges tourists not to visit as 21,000 people flee wildfires
Manitoba is urging tourists to reconsider visiting as it works to find shelter for a flood of wildfire evacuees now reaching 21,000.
“This is one of the largest evacuations in our province’s history,” Lisa Naylor, the Manitoba minister in charge of emergency management, said Monday.
“The government anticipates there may be a need for more hotel rooms as the wildfire season continues. For that reason, we are urging Manitobans and Canadians to reconsider non-essential travel and event plans within Manitoba."
Funnel cloud spotted near Steinbach, meteorologist says
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says two funnel clouds were spotted in Southern Manitoba on Sunday, including one near Steinbach.
Crawford Luke, a meteorologist with ECCC, says the first funnel cloud was seen around 2 p.m. northwest of Selkirk, and the second around 8 p.m. near Steinbach—though he says the exact location is unknown.

Province asks public to limit non-essential travel during wildfire emergency
The province has provided an update on the current wildfire situation.
Manitoba is currently facing one of the largest wildfire-related evacuations in its history. As of today, 28 wildfires are burning across the province, with 10 still classified as out of control. So far, there have been 114 wildfires reported.
Manitoban grain is featured in the Steinbach Arts Council by artist Naomi Gerrard
Local artist Naomi Gerrard currently has an exhibit up in the Steinbach Arts Council that incorporates Manitoban grain.
Gerrard says that she has been working with materials from the prairies for quite some time.
“I grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania and as kids, we always played with the grains that dad was growing. We'd haul them around in our trucks.”
CN deploying Poseidon and Trident to help fight the wildfires
The ongoing wildfire situation stretches from northern Ontario right across the prairies, with the threat to homes and communities and thousands of people being evacuated.
The Assistant Vice-President of Grain for CN, David Przednowek, says they are monitoring the situation very closely as their rail lines run through the north.
CN reports they've had some delays moving grain in and out of the Port at Thunder Bay but are also doing what they can to help with the wildfires.
Eastman Immigrant Services hosts event on navigating Canadian culture
Eastman Immigrant Services (EIS) is inviting newcomer families to an information session focused on understanding Canadian culture and forming meaningful connections.
Olesja Schwabauer, Program Director at EIS, says the event will take place on June 16 at 6 p.m. at K.R. Barkman Park. It will feature a guest speaker who will talk about the art of making friends in a new country—part of a larger series of cultural information sessions.

Radio campaign raises over $419K for wildfire evacuees in Manitoba
Manitobans have once again proven the power of community.
On June 5, more than 30 radio stations across the province joined forces for the first-ever Manitoba Day of Caring for Wildfire Evacuees, a province-wide broadcast initiative to support those displaced by wildfires.
