The Liberals rose from the ashes under Prime Minister Mark Carney in a stunning reversal of fortunes this year, but the party's failure to sweep many of the ridings it sought Monday night denied it a resounding majority mandate.

A big part of that failure happened in Ontario, where the party lost many incumbents — even as Carney called for a strong mandate to deal with the threat posed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Elections Canada says more than 19.5M voters cast a ballot in federal election

Elections Canada says more than 68 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot in the federal election — more than 19.5 million people.

While this election was widely expected to see increased turnout, it did not surpass the record set in March 1958, when 79.4 per cent of eligible Canadians voted.

But the nearly 68.7 per cent turnout was the best since the 1993 federal election, which saw 69.6 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot.

U13 Wildcats ready to jump start the 2025 season

After a long wait, the U13 AAA Wildcats softball club is ready to get outside and kick start what is looking like a very exciting season.

Head coach Jason Plett says everyone is anticipating getting out on the diamond again. "Oh man, the girls have been itching to get outside," the coach says with a chuckle. "The last month where the snow is kind of away but we can't get outside, it's depressing almost being stuck in the gym. But, now that the weather has turned we're very excited to get outside and practice, hopefully today."

The deadline to file tax returns is today: What to know

The clock is ticking on filing tax returns, with less than 24 hours left to submit.

"It has been crazy. One of our busiest years," says Leo Deurbrouck of Leo's Mobile Tax Service, saying people are still calling to book appointments with his service—which has been in overdrive, trying to accommodate everyone it can.

They are now completely booked.

"A lot of taxpayers are trying to get in and do their stuff before deadline."

Liberal candidate for Provencher reflects on federal election results

A local candidate in Monday's federal election is reflecting on the vote's results, and hopes others are doing the same.

Trevor Kirczenow was the liberal candidate for Provencher in the election, finishing off polls with 26 per cent of the vote—well over 13,000 ballots cast for him.

Candidate for the conservative party, Ted Falk, won the race with more than 66 per cent of Provencher residents' ticking his name on their ballot.

"Of course I wish the result had been different, but I'm grateful for the substantial support I received," Kirczenow says.

Former Fire Chief honoured with King Charles III Coronation Medal

The former Fire Chief for La Broquerie has been awarded a King Charles III Coronation Medal.

Alain Nadeau received the award from La Verendrye MLA Konrad Narth. Nadeau served 45 years on the La Broquerie Fire Department, the last 20 as Fire Chief. He retired from the department in 2024.

"He was integral in building and developing the fire department that they have there today," says Narth. "That's contributed to the growth and development of that municipality and the community of La Broquerie."

Blue Bombers add talent through 2025 draft

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers selected nine players in the 2025 CFL Draft held Tuesday night.

The Club began the night with a trade with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, acquiring National running back Matthew Peterson (Alberta), the second pick in the first round of the Global Draft, and the 39th pick overall (5th round) in the CFL Draft. In exchange, Hamilton received National defensive lineman Kyle Samson, the eighth pick in the first round of the Global Draft, and the 36th overall selection in the CFL Draft (4th round).

Field burn creates smoke near Mitchell

This afternoon, residents may have noticed a large cloud of smoke rising from the south of Mitchell.

It appears a controlled burn was taking place in a field approximately three miles south of town, near Centre Street.

The fire department did not receive any calls regarding the fire, and a Community Safety Officer from the RM of Hanover was on site monitoring the situation.
