Longest Ballot group declares victory in Poilievre's former riding amid criticism

A group trying to make a case for electoral reform by creating very long ballots is declaring victory in this week's election — even as critics accuse it of indulging in stunts that undermine democracy.

"It's been a success," said Mark Moutter, one of dozens of protest candidates who ran in the Ottawa riding of Carleton.

"I've never seen people looking more optimistically at electoral reform, ever."

Manitoba Agriculture issues first crop report of the season


Manitoba Agriculture has released its first crop report of the season, providing valuable insights into the current state of seeding and livestock activities across the province.

Oilseed Specialist Sonya Wilson says seeding is just getting underway, with provincial seeding progress at approximately three per cent. This is ahead of the five-year average of one per cent. Farmers are currently planting spring wheat, peas, and a small amount of oats, particularly in areas west of Brandon and near Rapid City, with some activity in other regions as well.

La Broquerie fire crews respond to structure fire on Road 31 North

Wednesday afternoon, La Broquerie Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Road 31 North, just west of Provincial Road 302.

JC Normandeau, chief of the department, says a spark from a burn barrel caught the bottom of a house on fire there.

The owner was able to douse the fire, he says, and minimal damage was caused.

No injuries have been reported.

Burst water pipe floods kitchen inside South East Event Centre

A burst pipe in the kitchen of the South East Event Centre (SEC) in Steinbach caused significant disruptions over the weekend, forcing the cancellation of events and delaying services. But according to the team behind the facility, things are slowly getting back on track. 

"We're getting back on track," said Jeffrey Bannon, General Manager at the SEC.  

Artista Academy's the Lion King an 'absolutely incredible' performance

Broadway style costumes bursting with colour and detail, six sold-out shows, and more than 100 performers—that's just a peek into Artista Academy's performance of the Lion King this weekend.

"It was absolutely incredible," says Gabriela Gallo, the show's director. "We had the best production team I've ever worked with."

She says the costumes were handmade, with headpieces made of white foam, hand-painted and glued together.

Barkman Avenue reopens after ruptured gas line fixed

Emergency crews closed one block of Barkman Avenue in Steinbach Wednesday morning, as the result of a gas leak.

Russ Reimer is Assistant Chief for Steinbach Fire Department. He says it appears as though someone was doing work on a house, which resulted in a gas line being ruptured. 

Barkman Avenue between Third Street and Fourth Street was quickly closed to traffic and Reimer says all adjacent homes were evacuated as a precaution.

First responders present on Barkman Ave between Third and Fourth St

First responders were called to Barkman Avenue between Third and Fourth Street this morning.

RCMP, fire crews and an ambulance have been on the scene for part of this morning.

Residents are encouraged to exercise caution through the area while they are present.

Details are unknown at this time, but more information is expected.
