Dawson Trek was a successful cycle across the southeast
Early morning on July 19th, a group of cyclists gathered in Winnipeg to begin their trek across the southeast, ending up East of Richer at the Eastman ATV Staging area.
The 96km ride took cyclists through Prairie Grove, the Center of Canada, St. Anne, and Richer.
As the sun rose, the cyclists got to experience the history of Canada’s oldest trail, stopping in the communities for snacks and sights.
U18 AA Carillon Sultans crowned provincial champions
It was a rollercoaster season for the U18 AA Carillon Sultans, but at the end of the ride, the group earned a provincial championship.
"It was a pretty surreal situation," coach Justin Anderson says about the year leading up to the big tournament. "We had a tough year, we actually got added into the Winnipeg AA league this year, so it gave the boys a lot more game than we're used to. But, they battled, and came out on top."
Classic car show rolling into Mennonite Heritage Village this weekend
The Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV) is set to welcome a nostalgic addition to its historical Main Street this weekend as the Country Classics Car Club comes to the village for its annual car show.
Robert Goertzen, executive director of MHV, says the partnership is a natural fit.
"The car club is preserving history with these vehicles as well, so there's a lot of ways that we have similar goals," he says.
Stuartburn man dies in fatal Western Manitoba crash
A young man from Stuartburn has died following a two-vehicle crash in Western Manitoba Tuesday morning.
According to RCMP, a gravel truck was struck from behind by a water truck near the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Road 101 West, east of Brandon.
Authorities say the gravel truck was coming up to speed, heading east after turning on to the Trans Canada, when it was hit from behind by a large truck hauling a water tank.

New Beef Cattle Research Council chair at the U of M to focus on best environmental practices and economic viability
A new beef-focused research chair will soon begin work at the University of Manitoba.
The 10-year role has been named the BCRC Chair in Beef Cattle Economic Sustainability.
“I believe this is the fourth chair position that we’ve developed,” said Craig Lehr, chair of the BCRC’s producer council.
Canada should follow U.K.'s move to lower voting age to 16, says senator
Now that the British government has vowed to lower its voting age to 16 by the next general election, one Canadian senator says it's past time for Canada to do the same.
The U.K. announced last week that it would lower its voting age from 18 to 16 in a bid to strengthen British democracy and restore trust in politics.
Sen. Marilou McPhedran said the issue has been her "top parliamentary priority" since she joined the Red Chamber. She said lowering the voting age to 16 would be good for democracy and that the only arguments against it are "based on stereotypes."

Barlow says the Liberal's Clean Fuel Standard will drive up food and fuel costs
Conservative Agriculture Critic John Barlow is warning that the Liberal's Clean Fuel Standard will hit Canadians hard at the gas pump and the grocery store.
Citing a recent Department of Agriculture briefing, Barlow said the policy will raise fuel prices by 13 cents per litre for gasoline and 16 cents per litre for diesel by 2030. He criticized the government for downplaying the impact on consumers.
