Council approves new Highway 52 commercial build with reduced setback

A commercial property along Highway 52 West will see new development after Steinbach City Council unanimously approved a variance application Tuesday evening. 

The request was submitted by David Golke on behalf of property owners Jung Seok Kang and Young Hee Hwang for 13 PTH 52 West. The variance allows for a reduced rear yard setback of five feet instead of the required 20 feet under the C2 commercial community zone. 

Free kids' programming set to blast off in the RM of Hanover

Free fun is rocketing into the Rural Municipality (RM) of Hanover this week.

Tayleigh Giesbrecht, recreation programmer for the RM, says two Rec Fun Days are planned at Kleefeld Park—essentially one-off day camps for kids aged five to 13.

"The first one will be July 23 (from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.), that's a Wednesday, and the theme is space," she says. "On July 25...it's Arctic."

E-bike, e-scooter use surging ahead of safety laws, says new CAA report

The growing popularity of e-bikes and e-scooters is outpacing the rules meant to govern their safe use, a new report from the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) warns.

The study, commissioned by CAA and conducted by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF), was released on Tuesday. It examines how these micromobility devices are regulated in Canada.

While the report shows public shared-fleet programs are generally well-governed, there are notable gaps in safety laws, data collection, and public awareness when it comes to privately owned devices.

Eastman Wildcats host U13 AAA fastball provincials in Friedensfeld all weekend

This weekend, the cooler weather is appreciated by softball fans as families and friends gather to support the Eastman Wildcats.   

The Wildcats are hosting U13 AAA fastball provincials at the Friedensfeld Community Center from July 17th to 20th, and local supporters are crowding the stands. 

More wildfires ignite in Manitoba, with most of province experiencing high fire danger

The number of active wildfires has grown by four since yesterday in Manitoba. 

The Manitoba Wildfire Service (MWS) says there are 122 active wildfires across our province, with 317 so far in 2025. Historically, the average number of fires by July 18 is 231. 

The MWS says the province continues at a high to very high fire danger level, with pockets of extreme fire danger in the northwest and east, while the south and middle of the province are at a low to moderate fire danger level.

Local country band nominated for Josie Award

Rising Canadian country duo, Banned & Outlawed, has been nominated for two Josie Awards. 

The Josie Awards is a show held in Nashville, Tenn., showcasing independent musical artists of all genres. 

Their song “Keepin It Western” is up for Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year, marking this a proud moment for the band. 

“It’s a pretty surreal feeling, something that a couple Canadian brothers can only dream of,” says Jon. 

Details for the RM of Ritchot's first-ever fun run cross finish line

A new event in the Rural Municipality (RM) of Ritchot is sprinting to reality.

Run Run Ritchot, the area's first-ever fun run, has officially been scheduled for Oct. 5 at the St. Adolphe River Park.

Danielle Peters, community engagement coordinator with the RM, says the run offers one and five kilometer options.

Anyone is welcome to participate, she adds.
