Rain amounts from soggy start to week

Monday was a soggy start to what is expected to be a cooler week in Southern Manitoba.

The temperature on Monday did not climb much above 20 degrees in southeastern Manitoba, which is well below the normal high of 26 degrees for this time of year. There was also rain on and off starting Monday and ending early Tuesday afternoon.

Manitoba Lung Association warns smoky days is like smoking cigarettes

Wildfire smoke posed a very high health risk to residents of Steinbach on Tuesday morning.

That is according to the Air Quality Health Index or AQHI. According to the Manitoba Lung Association, the AQHI is based on the combined levels of three different air pollutants. Those three are ground-level ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and fine particulate matter. 

'It's so important to get information from local media,' says Chair of government's local journalism committee

The Manitoba government’s all-party committee exploring the future of local journalism concluded a series of province-wide public consultations on Friday.

The final stop was held in Winkler, with Winnipeg, Brandon, Thompson and Gimli also hosting events previously. The consultations aimed to focus on rural and northern media and cultural media such as French, Filipino, Punjabi and Chinese language publications.

She is survived by 3 daughters, 3 sons, 5 sisters, 2 brothers, 1 sister-in-law, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Henry, 3 siblings, and 2 siblings at birth.  
The funeral service for Eva Kroeker nee Warkentin will be held Thursday, July 17th at 2pm at Birchwood Funeral Chapel. 
Viewing will be at the chapel prior to the service.

Paul Krasniuk, 75, of Landmark passed away Tuesday, July 8th at Landmark. He is survived by his wife Adele, Sons: Jonathan (Melissa), Richard (Zoe), Daughter: Rebecca (Paul), Grandchildren: Willow, Marley, Makiya, Seth, Tali, Isaiah, Damien (Kayla). He was predeceased by his parents Jack & Mary Krasniuk, his Brother: Peter, Brother in law: Bert Goossen
A memorial service for Paul Krasniuk will be held Sunday, July 20th at 2pm at Ridgeland Cemetery, Sundown, Manitoba.

Elfrieda Dyck, 91, of Winnipeg formerly of Brandon, passed away Saturday, July 12th at Bethania Personal Care Home. She is survived by 1 daughter, 2 sons, 2 siters, 1 brother, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband George, 1 sister, and 2 brothers. 
The funeral service for Elfrieda Dyck will be held Friday, July 18th at 2pm at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, with private family interment at Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Brandon.  

Inflation rises to 1.9% in June as vehicle price hikes accelerate

The annual pace of inflation accelerated to 1.9 per cent in June as consumers were paying more at car dealerships, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

The June price hike is up from 1.7 per cent in May and was largely in line with economists’ expectations.

StatCan said gasoline prices were nearly unchanged in June as higher crude oil prices and geopolitical conflicts ratcheted up pressure at the pumps. Motorists saw a steeper monthly decline in prices this time last year, which the agency said led to a rise in headline inflation.

Carney to meet with Incident Response Group to discuss the wildfire situation

Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to convene the Incident Response Group in Ottawa today to discuss the ongoing wildfire situation across the country.

Carney also convened the group of ministers and senior officials a little over a month ago in response to an earlier wave of wildfires, which peaked in May and June, then receded, and have now flared up again.

More than 6,000 people are currently out of their homes in Manitoba, and the communities of Lynn Lake and Snow Lake ordered residents to flee for the second time in just weeks.

Kleefeld's Chartrand part of Manitoba U18 Indigenous gold medal winning team

Javien Chartrand of Kleefeld was on the Manitoba U18 Indigenous team that claimed gold at the national championships, and the 16-year-old opened a lot of eyes with his play.

"I was nervous at first," Chartrand says about his feelings leading up to the big game in Winnipeg. "But, I was fine throughout the game."

There was a lot of great talent on the field, and Chartrand believes he was right there with all of them. "When the nerves left my body, I was fine. I just balled out."
