Manitoba cabinet minister apologizes again for sign-language interpreter comments

The Manitoba government is promising new financial penalties to enforce rules aimed at removing barriers for people with disabilities.

Nahanni Fontaine, the minister responsible for services for people with disabilities, says the NDP government will introduce changes to the Accessibility for Manitobans Act next spring.

In a video posted to social media, she also says the government will work to ensure every public event is fully accessible with participation from sign language interpreters.

Steinbach RCMP investigate assaults and truck theft over weekend

Steinbach RCMP are investigating a pair of assaults from the weekend.

The first one happened Saturday. RCMP were notified at 8:45 pm of a domestic assault at Reynolds Ponds. A 47-year-old male from Portage la Prairie now faces charges of assault and uttering threats.

Then on Sunday at 12:26 am, Steinbach RCMP were informed of an assault in the Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne. The alleged incident happened off Road 31E, north of Provincial Road 210, northeast of Landmark. As a result, an 18-year-old male from Landmark faces charges of assault against another male.

Margaret Harder nee Dueck, 93, of Altona passed away Saturday, July 12th at Altona Memorial Health Centre. She is survived by 2 daughters, 6 sons, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Ed, 1 daughter, 1 son, 1 daughter-in-law, and 1 grandson. 
The funeral service for Margaret Harder nee Dueck will be held Thursday, July 17th at 2pm at South Park Mennonite Brethren Church, Altona with burial at Altona Cemetery.

Summertime fun at the Mennonite Heritage Village 

The summer season is off to a great start at the Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV) in Steinbach.  

As the first week of Pioneer Day Camps came to an end, Jaysa Thiessen, program coordinator at MHV, says it’s been a great start with a great group. 

“(The kids) are just so excited to be at the museum doing all the activities,” says Thiessen.

For Funk’s Autobody in Steinbach, the upcoming “Fix a Dent, Fund a Cure” event is more than just a fundraiser – it’s a heartfelt initiative rooted in personal experiences. Owner Myles Chaput shares, “Cancer has touched all of our lives, including within our own business circles. Cystic fibrosis hits even closer to home for me personally; both of my cousins were born with it. I’ve watched them battle it their entire lives.”

MPI reminds Manitobans to replace peeling license plates

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is reminding motorists to replace their license plates if the letters or numbers are peeling.

Tara Seel is Media and Public Relations Lead. She says once the numbers or the reflective coating begins to peel off plates, they create safety concerns for all road users, including law enforcement. 

"Traffic stops are dangerous in and of themselves," notes Seel. "They now have to approach a vehicle when they are not able to read that license plate and have a little bit of information to go in with."

Hanover School Division board approves updates to governance policy

The Hanover School Division (HSD) board of trustees has approved several updates to its board governance policy, known as Policy BD, which outlines operational procedures and board bylaws.

Policy "BD," was adopted in June 2010 and last reviewed in April 2020. The most recent changes were approved at the board's public meeting on June 26.

"There was a lot in there that was very old and actually contradicted itself," explains Jeff Friesen, chair of the board.
