Education takes centre stage as Legislative Assembly opens spring session

Education was front and centre as the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly opened its spring session. 

Overshadowing the session is the ongoing job action by the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) as collective bargaining negotiations have stalled between the teachers’ union and the provincial government. 

Thousands of educators came to the Legislative Building to demonstrate as the session got underway.

Special weather statement issued as Alberta clipper moves in

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement for Swift Current and the surrounding area as an Alberta clipper moves into the area. 

The mild weather we have been experiencing is making way for more active winter weather early next week. 

The clipper system is expected to develop on Sunday night and work its way across the prairies on Monday.  

Five die in Davidson house fire

Five people have died after a house fire in Davidson over the weekend.

Craik RCMP and the Davidson Fire Department were called to a house fire at about 12:30 p.m. on Sunday on Ottawa Street in Davidson.

An 80-year-old man and 81-year-old woman were removed from the building and sent to the Davidson Hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.

Emergency crews found the remains of three children after the fire was put out.

Autopsies for all five victims are expected to take place in Saskatoon this week.

Planned 8-hour SaskPower outage for Wed. in Westmount and West Heath

Some areas of Moose Jaw will be without power for eight hours on Wednesday, February 7th, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The outage will affect all residents on the 0 block of Brigham Road, odd numbers on the 100 block of Wellington Drive, odd numbers on the 1200 to 1500 blocks of Spadina Street and the odd numbers on the 1600 block of Spadina Drive. 

Opposition leader, premier react to charges against Moose Jaw MLA

NDP opposition leader Carla Beck and Premier Scott Moe have come out with statements following the announcement of criminal charges against Moose Jaw Wakamow MLA Greg Lawrence. 

Lawrence resigned from the Saskatchewan Party caucus on Tuesday citing “an active police investigation is occurring into historical complaints.”

Moose Jaw Wakamow MLA charged with assault, choking

Moose Jaw Wakamow MLA Greg Lawrence has been charged with assault.

The Moose Jaw Police Service began investigating complaints of an assault during an interaction between two people on June 27, 2023.

Lawrence, 58, was charged on Wednesday with assault and assault by choking. His first court appearance will be March 18 at Moose Jaw Provincial Court.

The Moose Jaw Police Service says no further information will be released as these matters are now before the courts.
