City rezones Northlands lot for future development

The City of Kenora has given the Kenora District Services Board the go-ahead to eventually develop the former Northlands property in downtown Kenora.

At their June 21 Council meeting, councillors approved the KDSB’s application to reclassify the property at 216 Matheson Street South from Institutional Zoning to a General Commercial Zone, which will allow for the future development of a multi-unit residential building.

Canada handled the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic and weathered the ensuing upheaval better than several other nations with comparable health-care and economic infrastructure, a new study suggests.

The research, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on Monday, credits Canada's strong performance to restrictive and persistent public health measures as well as a successful vaccination campaign.

McMillan announces retirement ahead of 2022 election

Kenora City Councillor Rory McMillan says he plans to step away from public service ahead of the 2022 Municipal Election in Kenora, as he looks ahead to his second retirement.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity,” said McMillan, in his comments to councillors on June 21.

“I’ve had the good fortune to work with many great women and men who have served our city as councillors and mayors over the years. It’s been quite an honour. I want to thank the people of Kenora for placing their trust in me and voting for me over the past 28 years.”

Early morning fire contained at Weyerhaeuser

At approximately 8:00am Kenora Fire and Emergency Services were dispatched to a fire at Weyerhaeuser on Jones Road. 

“On arrival, there was smoke coming from the vent stack on the roof. We believe there was a dust collector or filters that got a spark and caught fire. It’s under control and we’re making sure there’s no hotspots, just making sure it doesn’t flare up,” said Deputy Fire Chief Dave Pratt. 

Blue Bombers stay unbeaten with 26-12 win over Tiger-Cats

Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive lineman Willie Jefferson was understated about his fourth-quarter interception for a touchdown Friday.

The veteran snared a tipped pass by Hamilton quarterback Dane Evans to help seal Winnipeg's 26-12 win over the visiting Tiger-Cats.

The Bombers (3-0) remained unbeaten to start the CFL season, while the Ticats were winless in three starts.

“It was a good night. A good night at the office,” Jefferson said. “Offence, defence, special teams came out and did what we needed to do, get the win.”

Uneven economic recovery does not bring all Canadian women with it: experts

After more than two years of economic turbulence through the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada's workforce participation overall appears quite rosy for women.

The share of women aged 25 to 54 years old is at its highest level ever in the country at 85 per cent. Meanwhile, unemployment for all workers hit a record low, according to Statistics Canada.

But experts say while looking at the economic big picture might seem like cause for celebration, a closer inspection at the details offers a more nuanced look at the uneven recovery that has not uplifted all groups of women equally.

Speedway postpones open practice until Sunday

Friday night's rain has forced Lake of the Woods Speedway to postpone Saturday's open practice.

The open practice has been moved to Sunday, June 26, 2022 from 12:00pm to 3:30pm. Free admission for all spectators to get a first look at the Q104 WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, WISSOTA Pure Stocks and 4-cylinders. 

The season opener at Lake of the Woods Speedway will be Sunday, July 3, 2022 with hot laps at 4:00pm and racing at 4:30pm.

Lake of the Woods Speedway is located at 556 Jones Road. 

Thunderstorm warning issued for Kenora area, tornado watch continues

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Kenora, Grassy Narrows, Whitedog, and the surrounding communities.

The weather agency says, as of 5:46 p.m. CDT, meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing up to nickel size hail and heavy rain. This severe thunderstorm is located near Shrub Lake, moving northeast at 40 km/h. Big Canon Lake and Canyon Lake could also be impacted.
