Trudeau pledges to defend abortion rights around the world amid 'devastating setback'

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is promising to defend abortion rights in Canada and around the world after what he calls a "devastating setback" in the United States.

He and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly reacted Friday to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn its 50-year-old Roe v. Wade ruling that had guaranteed countrywide access to abortion.

Storm Watch in effect, 100 km/h winds possible

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect in the Kenora and Dryden areas, calling for up to 100 km/h winds, nickel to quarter-sized hail and heavy downpours.

Environment Canada says they expect the storm to hit the area this afternoon or tonight.

Environment Canada adds that strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off of trees and overturn large vehicles, so residents should be prepared for severe weather.

17-year-old angler drowns near Ignace

A 17-year-old Wisconsin resident has passed away after a fishing trip on Kukukus Lake near Ignace.

The Ignace OPP say on June 21, officers were notified of an incident where two individuals had been fishing when one of them fell overboard into the water.

Police say the other individual jumped in the water to rescue the individual, but they couldn’t be found and the police were then contacted to conduct a search of the area.

Beaver Brae Secondary School celebrates the class of 2022!

It's been a wild ride for the graduating class of 2022 after two years of pandemic-style education.  

Beaver Brae Secondary School graduation is returning to the Kenora White Cap tonight and everyone is invited to come to celebrate the student's hard work!  

The ceremony will begin at 7:00 pm though the graduating class will meet at The Muse just before.  

Ministry investigating aggressive deer reports

Conservation Officers with the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry are looking into reports of an aggressive deer in the Second Street North area of Kenora.

Reportedly, the deer has approached and attacked two dogs in the last three days in the area. Residents in the Second Street North and Fourth Avenue areas are asked to keep a close eye on their pets when they’re outside.

Sioux Lookout resident wins $100,000 with ENCORE win

Sioux Lookout's Dean Larose is $100,000 richer after matching the last six of seven numbers in the LOTTARIO ENCORE draw. 

He chose to play the extra loonie in the May 14, 2022 draw and turned one figure into six. Dean, a retiree, says he has been a regular lottery player since 1975.

"I've been playing my own numbers, and this is my first big win," he shared while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up his winnings. "I always say yes to ENCORE!"

Deadline approaches for Kenora Sports Hall of Fame nominations

Q104 is proud to present the second Kenora Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday, October 15, 2022 and the deadline to submit nominations is coming quickly.

Kenora has a long history of sports including lawn bowling, rowing, baseball, fastball, slo-pitch, ice racing, stock car racing, fishing, skiing, high school sports and a great number of organizers, players and teams. Water levels stabilizing in Kenora area

A return to ‘normal’ water levels is still likely to be multiple weeks away, but levels seem to be stabilizing in the Kenora area.

Staff with the Lake of the Woods Control Board say with only short-lived precipitation in this week’s forecast and a general trend of average precipitation in June, inflows into Lake of the Woods are remaining stable or decreasing very slowly.

No Frills fed and raised $2,000 for those in need in Kenora

A local business owner worked to make a difference for those less fortunate on National Indigenous Peoples Day in Kenora.

Tracy Hall, Owner and Manager of Tracy’s No Frills in Kenora, explains that she and her staff hosted a bannock burger barbecue on Tuesday, with 100 per cent of the money raised being donated to the Kenora Fellowship Centre and the Minto Area Parent Child Resource Centre to support those in need in the community. 

Sports Update June 23

It was all tied up in the Casey's Women's Soccer League last night. Jarnel and Dufresne's struggled to get any to the back of the net as they tied nil-nil. Pizza Cats and Rush managed to do so in their 1-1 tie match.

In Women's Slo-Pitch, it was the Neniska Crushers who came out on top over Jarnel Contracting 13-5.  The Stykers took out Bat Intentions 18-13, and the Riverview Rebels eeked out the W over Dunit 17-16.
