Judy Garrison
Judy Garrison passed away peacefully at home, with family by her side, in the early morning of Friday November 26, 2021. Judy was born July 27, 1942, in Winnipeg Manitoba. Mom moved to Kenora in 1958. Judy is survived by her children: Cathy (Kelly), Linda (Leonard), Gilbert, Karen (Greg). Three grandchildren: Luke, Hayley, Megan and three great grandchildren: William, James and Sophia. Her three sisters: Lillian (Don), Gladys, and Claire. God daughter Cindy, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was an excellent cook and baker.
Up to $250K available for those that lost property to flooding
Residents in the region now have access to the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians (DRAO) program.
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing said in a prepared release, "The disaster assistance program applies to a primary residence and its basic contents, or to a small business, farm, or not-for-profit organization."
"Following a natural disaster, it may provide assistance for basic emergency and clean-up expenses and the costs to repair or replace essential property not covered by insurance."
June 9 Sports Update
In Kenora baseball action, the Carstar Rockies edged out the Tri-Star Red Eyes 15 to 14. CUPE won 14 to 7 against the Renegades. And Kenora DJ Services beat the WHNAC Wreckers 18 – 6.
In Soccer action, TA’s Grade 7 and 8 soccer team took gold in Dryden after going undefeated, beating Beaver Brae 5-0 in the finals. Their next tournament will be June 21 when they host the All Catholic Championships.
Matiowski Farmers' Market celebrates 17th summer
The Matiowski Farmers' Market kicks off its 17th season when it opens on Wednesday, June 15, 2022.
"By the first week of July, we will have over 100 vendors. That is seasonal, 10 week and rotating casual vendors, but for the month of June, we'll start in the 70's and we will grow as the season progresses," said market co-ordinator Helena Devins.
The market takes place Wednesdays at the Whitecap Pavilion on the Kenora Harbourfront and is open from 8:30am to 2:00pm. Admission is free.
North of the Bypass Property Owners share feelings with City Council
The region has been experiencing record-setting levels of rising water this spring which has caused structural damage to many of the major roads north of the Kenora bypass.
By mid-May 2022, the City of Kenora had issued an evacuation order for many of the residents who live north of the bypass due to the unsafe road and flood conditions.
Lake of the Woods one foot away from the record level
Lake of the Woods is one foot away from reaching the record peak that was set in 1950.
The Lake of the Woods Control Board (LWCB) says the lake rose by 8 cm (3 in) over the past week to 323.99 m (1063.0 ft), over 95th percentile level for this time of year.
The level of Lake of the Woods is expected to rise by approximately 6-10 cm (2-4 in) over the next 7 days, getting closer to the record level of 324.31 m (1064.0 ft) which was set in July of 1950.

It’s the inflation you’re not supposed to see.
From toilet paper to yogurt and coffee to corn chips, manufacturers are quietly shrinking package sizes without lowering prices. It’s dubbed “shrinkflation,” and it’s accelerating worldwide.
In the U.S., a small box of Kleenex now has 60 tissues; a few months ago, it had 65. Chobani Flips yogurts have shrunk from 5.3 ounces to 4.5 ounces. In the U.K., Nestle slimmed down its Nescafe Azera Americano coffee tins from 100 grams to 90 grams. In India, a bar of Vim dish soap has shrunk from 155 grams to 135 grams.
Sioux Lookout woman wins $100,000
A Sioux Lookout resident is $100,000 richer following a $1 bet.
Patricia Beaudoin matched the last six of seven ENCORE numbers in the exact order in the January 8, 2022, LOTTO 6/49 draw to win $100,000.
Beaudoin says she thought at first there was an error with the machine at the store.
"I checked it three times and the store clerk noticed I was taking a while, so she came over to help me out," said Beaudoin in a prepared release from OLG.
North Star Lodge heroes help save a life in water rescue
Two workers at a local lodge say they will never forget the night of June 4 when they helped to save the life of one man, before stumbling onto the body of a second man.
Drake Guse and Kelly Chernosky say they were working at North Star Lodge on Clay Lake, up Highway 609 North of Quibell and Vermilion Bay, when the owner of the lodge, Stan Guse, was contacted by members of the OPP.
Police had only recently received a report of a capsized boat on Clay Lake, shortly after 5 p.m. Their information indicated that two men had been fishing near rapids when their boat capsized.
New system to track flood conditions in Kenora
The City of Kenora has created a new way for residents to keep track of road conditions in the evacuation area north of the by-pass.
The city says after researching flooding safety standards, their new Trigger Point Evaluation System lays out action plans for when flood waters reach certain ‘trigger points’ on local roadways.
