Rickford: ‘Wabaseemoong is our top priority,’ after water system failure

Over 800 Wabaseemoong Independent Nation members remain in their homes without any running water after a water treatment plant failure, and provincial and federal agencies are stepping up to support those who stayed behind.

Shortly before Christmas, the Wabaseemoong community lost all access to running water due to mechanical issues at their water treatment plant’s pumphouse, and engineers were quickly dispatched to investigate and repair any issues.

Ice roads open at MNRF landing, Windigo Island

The Kenora area’s ice roads are opening up and residents are reminded to use them at their own risk.

Leonard Boucha, who has helped maintain local ice roads for over 30 years and provides updates on his ‘Winter Road Update for Kenora Area’ Facebook page, says the MNRF landing and the ice road to Windigo Island are now both open.

Pinecrest outbreak grows to 8, visitor restrictions continue

The COVID-19 outbreak at Kenora’s Pinecrest Home for the Aged is still in effect and has grown from three to eight residents.

The outbreak was first reported on January 4 after three residents tested positive.

Now, Assistant Administrator Michelle Spencer says the outbreak has grown to eight residents as of January 9, with one of the positive residents located in Unit 2 – which is not in an outbreak.

NWO still paying highest fuel prices in Ontario

Ontario’s average gas price has been dropping over the past week – but prices haven’t budged in the Kenora District where we continue to pay the most for fuel across the province.

The average fuel price in Ontario is sitting at 139.7 per litre according to statistics from GasBuddy, but drivers in Kenora are paying 160.9, Dryden’s paying 154.9 and Red Lake’s up to 164.9 per litre. Prices aren’t listed for Sioux Lookout.

First Nation group buys local business for $3.7 million

A number of First Nation communities in northwestern Ontario now have a stake in a local business after the ThawiKayhiGan Group (TKG Group) acquired Oshtugon Computers Inc. for $3.7 million.

The TKG Group was established in 2018 and is owned equally by Kingfisher Lake, Kasabonika Lake, Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug, Wapekeka, Wawakapewin and Wunnumin Lake First Nations. The group, based in Thunder Bay, works to generate new economic opportunities for its communities.

Arthur Rayman Land, age 32, of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2022. Arthur was born in Kenora, Ontario. 

A viewing was held on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at 7:00pm at Aboriginal Funeral Home, Winnipeg, Manitoba. 

A visitation & service will occur Thursday, January 5, 2023 from 11:00am to 2:00pm at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre with Pastor Frank Kowal officiating, cremation will follow.

Terry Ray Gliddy, a member of Wunnumin Lake First Nation, resident of Keewatin, Ontario passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora, Ontario.

Terry was predeceased by his parents Tommy and Jeannie Victoria Gliddy (Nee Beardy), sister Christine Gliddy and his grandparents Jake Beardy and Joseph and Mary Gliddy.
