FIREFLY Receives Donation For Food
The Minto EarlyON Child and Family Center is getting a late Christmas gift.
The Settlers Foundation is providing 10 thousand dollars for their food programs.
FIREFLY operates the center for families and their children in the Minto area.
The Center says the funding will help with its free programming, including food security services.
Housing development plans grow on Skillen Crescent
Plans for a housing development in Dryden could grow from 18 units to 60 units, if changes are approved by Council members.
During a Committee of the Whole meeting at City Hall on January 9, Chief Building Official Pam Skillen laid out an amended development agreement for future work at 5 Skillen Crescent.
Red Lake Makes Case For Event Center And Arena
The Town of Red Lake continues to push for funding for a new arena and event center.
Mayor Fred Mota says unfortunately they have been turned down for infrastructure funding for that project.
“The problem we face from the province is that there is no programs currently available to support our asset management plans for projects such as this,” Mota told the Ontario Finance Committee during pre-budget hearings earlier this week in Kenora.
Mota says the Cochenour Arena is over 60 years old and needs to be replaced.
Federal Court Allows Late Claims In CAF Sexual Misconduct Lawsuits
The ruling issued last week will allow late claims in the Canadian Armed Forces/Department of National Defence Sexual Misconduct Class Actions, where it is in the interests of justice to do so until February 5th of this year.
When the motion was heard approximately 640 people were seeking to file late claims after the deadline, which had been set for January 23rd, 2022.

City Ready To Hire Community Safety Coordinator
Kenora City council isn’t taking much time to act on a public meeting late last month.
One of their promises was to hire a Community Safety & Well Being Coordinator.
Councillor Graham Chaze says the salary of just over $87,600 a year might not be enough.
“I have concerns that the salary range might be too low,” Chaze said at the Committee of the Whole meeting of city council on Wednesday morning.
Malware Uploaded To LCBO Website
The Liquor Control Board of Ontario says a cybersecurity issue has forced the shutdown customer access to its website and mobile app.
In a release the LCBO confirms an unauthorized party embedded malicious code into its website that was designed to obtain customer information during the checkout process.

Kenora man, 40, busted with cocaine, meth and more
A 40-year-old Kenora resident is facing several charges after being busted with cocaine, meth, cash and two weapons in downtown Kenora – after officers witnessed a drug deal.
The OPP say officers witnessed the suspected drug transaction on January 6 during an investigation.
As a result, officers arrested two individuals and seized quantities of cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, hydromorphone tablets and other items used in the sale of drugs. The rough value of the suspected substances is over $600, according to the OPP.

Officers and leadership with the Treaty Three Police Service are continuing to crack down and raise awareness about human trafficking taking place in northwestern Ontario.
Police unveiled new community posters that feature anti-human trafficking messages in Anishinaabemowin at a traditional feast in the territory of the Anishinaabeg of Naongashiing, otherwise known as Big Island First Nation, on January 10.
KDSB Addresses Social Service Needs
The Kenora District Services Board says it doesn’t necessarily need more money.
Henry Wall is the Chief Administrative Officer and made a presentation to the pre-budget consultations in Kenora on Monday.
Wall told the finance committee that it wants to do things differently to make difference in lives of people who need their services.
“There is a very bright potential future for northern Ontario, but we need to do things differently,” Wall told the Ontario Finance Committee during their stop in Kenora this week for a pre-budget hearing.
