SIJHL games to support Triple P.L.A.Y.

Q104 is very proud to present two SIJHL exhibition games in Kenora between the Dryden GM Ice Dogs and Red Lake Miners, Friday, September 16 and Saturday, September 17 at the Kenora Recreation Centre.

These games are a fundraiser for Triple P.L.A.Y. - Positive Leisure Activities for Youth in Kenora.

“This event is in partnership with both high schools, Beaver Brae and Thomas Aquinas. They will be with us selling 50/50 tickets, with all proceeds going to athletic programs at both high schools,” said Barry Reynard, Triple P.L.A.Y. coordinator.

Radbourne to lead KPDSB in 2022-2023

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board has chosen a new leader ahead of the 2022-2023 school year.

Christy Radbourne has been named as the board’s new Director of Education as of September 6, 2022, taking the position of the outgoing Sherri-Lynne Pharand.

In a prepared release, the KPDSB says Radbourne’s an accomplished educator with over 20 years of experience, and most recently worked as a Student Achievement Officer with the Ministry of Education – working to assist boards with learning plan, framework and curriculum development across the province. 

Kenora inspecting docks, roadways for flood damage

The City of Kenora says work is continuing to reopen a number of roadways, docks and pieces of infrastructure after this spring’s nearly record-breaking rainfall, water levels and flooding.

The city says their Municipal Emergency Control Group, along with staff, are inspecting infrastructure that’s been affected by the high water levels to ensure it’s safe for public use.

The city says these inspections are being prioritized, and include wharfs, docks, roadways and more.

Manitoba commits to twinning after Lugli letter

Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson is committing the Manitoba government to twin Highway 17 between the Manitoba/Ontario border and Falcon Lake, in response to a local family’s call to action.

Earlier this month, Peter Lugli, the brother of Dryden’s Mark Lugli and uncle of Jacob Lugli – who passed away in a tragic accident in the Falcon Lake area three years ago – had sent an open letter to the Premier calling for the highway to be twinned.

LOTW water levels still not in normal ranges

Water levels on Lake of the Woods still haven’t returned to normal levels after this year’s nearly record-breaking rainfall and floods, but they are improving.

The Lake of the Woods Control Board says the current level of Lake of the Woods remains over its 95th percentile level for this time of the year, after dropping by 4” over the past week.

Dams in Kenora remain fully open, and LOTW is expected to drop by another 5” over the next week. On the Winnipeg River, levels are expected to fall by another 2 to 3” over the next week, as levels on LOTW fall.

In men's slo-pitch playoff action, the DSmith A's took down the Carstar Rockies to advance in the A-Side bracket.

The Redeyes won over Centuries and they will face DSmith tonight. On the B-Side, Sons of Pitches knocked out Matheson Bay.

In the women's division, CUPE defeated Shear Heaven Clippers to head to the finals for the C-Side.

Tonight, Devil's Gap will see Northern Harbour on the A-Side. On the B Side – the Dunit Diamonds and Bat intentions will look to avoid elimination as they battle it out. While the Strykers take on DJ Services.

Proposed alcohol guidelines highlight health risks with just a few drinks per week

A proposed overhaul of Canada’s decade-old drinking guidelines warns of increased health risks from as few as three drinks per week and calls for mandatory labelling of all alcoholic beverages.

In its suggested update to Canada’s Low-Risk Alcohol Drinking Guidelines, the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction eschews offering a specific daily or weekly limit in favour of outlining a continuum of risk and urging "less is better."
