Canadian veterans in France to mark 80th anniversary of disastrous Dieppe Raid
Canadian flags hang alongside French and British on the streets of Dieppe, France, each August as the city marks the anniversary of an important and disastrous day during the Second World War.
Eighty years ago today, more than 5,000 Canadian soldiers were sent onto the beaches in an attempt to breach the occupied town from the sea.
Among them was 20-year-old Gordon Fennell, a member of the Calgary Tanks regiment, who has returned this week to commemorate the battle in which more than 900 Canadians died.

Plane forced to land on Highway 17, no injuries reported
No injuries have been reported after an aircraft performed an emergency landing on Highway 17 on Tuesday, but the Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the scene.
The Marathon OPP say on August 16 at roughly 3 p.m., emergency responders with the OPP, Marathon Volunteer Fire Department and Superior North Emergency Medical Services received a report of an aircraft blocking traffic on Highway 17, near the Neys Provincial Park.
Second Avenue South closure extended
You may need a detour for your detour as the City of Kenora has closed another road.
The closure along Second Avenue South has been extended. The section between Mike Richards Way and Sixth Street South is now closed to allow contractors to complete surface, water and sanitary sewer works.
Initially, Second Avenue South was closed between Five Street South and Sixth Street South.
The city expects work to be completed and for the road to reopen on Friday, September 23.

How much rain fell in Kenora on Tuesday?
Between 33.6 mm and 54 mm of rain fell in Kenora as a storm system hammered the community Tuesday.
"Looking at the numbers at the Kenora Airport, we have a couple of sites at the airport, one site picked up 33.6 mm, while the other site picked up 35.6 mm. A site east of the airport picked up almost 54 mm and a site a little to the west of the airport picked up 46.6 mm," said Environment Canada meteorologist, Geoff Coulson.
"A notable rainfall for a month so far that has pretty much been on the dry side."
LOTW Control Board shifting focus to winter freeze-up
Things are returning to normal for staff with the Lake of the Woods Control Board.
Staff say with water levels returning to more normal ranges in northwestern Ontario, the board will no longer be operating on an emergency basis – which included frequent meetings with municipalities, ministries and First Nation communities.
80 years after Dieppe, postcards share stories of soldiers who died in deadly raid
Paris Eakins was 26 years old when he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in November 1940 during the Second World War.
He was born in Minnedosa, Man., where he lived until he attended the University of Manitoba, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree. Eakins worked at his town's newspaper and went on to join the sports department at the Winnipeg Free Press.
After he enlisted, Eakins worked his way to become a pilot officer in a fighter squadron based in England in 1941. The next year, he was killed in northern France during the disastrous Dieppe Raid. He was 27.

Gussy is coming off a 20th-place finish at the Kenora Bass International. In his professional career, he has competed in 38 tournaments with 13 top 20 finishes, four top 10, one second place, and one first place at the 2021 Bassmaster Elite. Slowing inflation not enough to prevent September interest rate hike, economists say
Inflation in Canada finally appears to have peaked, but it nonetheless remains too high to dissuade the Bank of Canada from raising interest rates significantly in September, economists say.
The year-over-year inflation rate slowed to 7.6 per cent in July, Statistics Canada reported Tuesday, with the deceleration largely driven by a decline in gas prices even as prices for food, rent and travel continued to rise.
