Northwestern Ontario residents should be battening down the hatches today ahead of some potentially heavy downpours in parts of the region, and drivers should be prepared for the worst.
Canada's inflation rate slows to 7.6% in July as gas prices fall
Canada's year-over-year inflation rate slowed to 7.6 per cent in July, with the deceleration largely driven by a decline in gas prices.
The inflation rate hit a nearly 40-year-high of 8.1 per cent in June, but economists were widely expecting inflation to have since slowed.
In its latest consumer price index report, Statistics Canada said the rise in prices in July was the smallest monthly gains since December 2021.
It also marks the first decline in year-over-year inflation since June 2020.

Heavy rainfall warning for Kenora
Environment Canada has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Kenora, Sioux Narrows, Grassy Narrows, Whitedog, Nestor Falls and Morson.
Ontario’s 2023 budget aims to help NWO ‘get back on track’
Northwestern Ontario’s member of provincial parliament says Ontario’s new budget will help to address gaps created by COVID-19 across the region.
“We’ve got to get back on track and build out northwestern Ontario,” said Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford, in an interview with the Q Morning Show. “Hospitals to highways, bridges to broadband, we’re focused on a number of different opportunities.”

It was a jam-packed night for slo-pitch in Kenora. On the ladies' side, it was the Devils Gap Chiefs that took down Dunit Contracting 21-16, despite an out-of-the-park home run by Dunit's Lexi Cameron. Northern Harbour took down the Royals 34-17 with Megan Derouard contributing two home runs. The Neniska Crushers took down the Strykers 18-12 and Bat Intentions defeated CUPE 9-6.
Lakeside road work to continue into November
Road work will be taking place in the Lakeside area until November, closing down a roadway and creating a detour for local residents.
The City of Kenora says Titan Contractors Kenora have started surface, water and sanitary sewer work on Seventh Avenue South, from Sixth Street South to Eighth Avenue South, with work expected to wrap up by November 10, 2022.
Thousands of Afghans who helped Canada trapped in Afghanistan, struggling to leave
The federal government needs to do more to help thousands of Afghans who assisted Canadian Forces but remain trapped in Afghanistan a year after the Taliban seized Kabul, aid groups and opposition parties say.
As the grim anniversary passed Monday, NDP immigration critic Jenny Kwan warned at a news conference that Canada will have blood on its hands if it does not take immediate action to help Afghans whose lives are in danger because they helped Canadians.

The Sioux Lookout OPP is asking for the public’s assistance in locating missing 36-year-old Danielle Trubyk.
Police say Trubyk was last seen on August 14 around 2 p.m. as she was leaving her residence on Seventh Avenue in Sioux Lookout.
Kenora area under a rainfall warning
A rainfall warning is in effect for Kenora, Grassy Narrows, Whitedog, and the surrounding communities.
The weather agency says, Radar indicates a nearly stationary thunderstorm located 5 kilometres southwest of Lount Lake. Rainfall amounts of over 30 mm have already occurred, with another 10 to 30 mm possible by later this afternoon.
The hazard is expected to diminish as the afternoon goes on.
Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
