Today is Agricultural Societies Day in Alberta


 The Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies has designated September 21st to recognize and promote the significant contributions that agricultural societies make.

Agricultural societies are volunteer driven, not-for-profit organizations that help to enhance quality of life through the development of programs and services, and providing facilities that meet community needs.

CETA's 5-year anniversary disappointing for the cattle sector

Today marks the five year anniversary for CETA - the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and European Union. 

The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) remains a leading supporter of opening access for Canadian beef exports to the European Union. Although the CETA created quotas for nearly 65,000 tonnes of duty-free access for Canadian beef, unresolved technical barriers have 
prevented CETA from delivering its full potential. 

Manitoba Crop Alliance accepting nominations for crop committee delegates

The Manitoba Crop Alliance (MCA) is now accepting nominations from farmer members to serve as delegates on its four crop committees.

Those being corn (4 positions), wheat and barley (5 positions), sunflower (4 positions) and flax (4 positions).

MCA Chair Robert Misko says there are many benefits to becoming a delegate.

Manitoba celebrates eighth annual Food and Farm Awareness Week

The Manitoba government is encouraging all Manitobans to celebrate the province’s agri-food system during the eighth annual Food and Farm Awareness Week.

“Manitoba’s agri-food industry produces a diverse range of delicious foods,” said Manitoba Agriculture Minister Derek Johnson. “I encourage Manitobans to celebrate Food and Farm Awareness Week by trying new local products.”

Avian influenza continues to spread across Western Canada

There has been an increasing number of cases of avian influenza across Western Canada.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), as of September 14th, there are 19 infected premises in Alberta, 9 in BC, 8 in Saskatchewan, and 3 in Manitoba. Nearly 1.5 million birds have been impacted in those four provinces over the course of the outbreak. 

Ontario currently has 8 infected premises.

Dion McGrath settles into his new role

Monday marked the first day on the job for the new Executive Director of Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan.

Dion McGrath says there were a number of things that attracted him to the position.

"One was the was the success of the organization itself, and being a voice of Saskatchewan agriculture and advocating for the success of agriculture in terms of public policy regarding its impact on agriculture. The second thing was the team that is already at APAS are tremendously talented at what they do."

Protein Industries Canada launches new artificial intelligence program

Through a $30 million commitment under the Government of Canada’s Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy (PCAIS), Protein Industries Canada is launching a new stream of programing that will co-invest in collaborative projects that utilize artificial intelligence to help grow Canada’s plant-based food, feed and ingredients ecosystem efficiently and sustainably.

Ag in the Classroom Manitoba launches Foundations of Agriculture Virtual Resource Hub

Agriculture in the Classroom-Manitoba (AITC-M) kicked off Food and Farm Awareness Week on September 19th with the launch of the Foundations of Agriculture Virtual Resource Hub.

Targeting all students from grades K-12, Foundations of Manitoba Agriculture is a series of interactive courses and information sheets that invite teachers and students to explore 18 different crops grown and animals raised in Manitoba - connecting what they eat to the journey their food takes to get from farm to plate.
